Provocative comments over the weekend from Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell will provide grist for the 'grassroots vs. establishment' mill for some time. In an interview with the New York Times about the 2014 election cycle, McConnell predicted that Tea Party-backed Senate candidates will get wiped out in GOP primaries this year:
This election season, Republicans led by Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky are taking a much harder line as they sense the majority within reach. Top congressional Republicans and their allies are challenging the advocacy groups head on in an aggressive effort to undermine their credibility. The goal is to deny them any Senate primary victories, cut into their fund-raising and diminish them as a future force in Republican politics. I think we are going to crush them everywhere, Mr. McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, said in an interview, referring to the network of activist organizations working against him and two Republican incumbents in Kansas and Mississippi while engaging in a handful of other contests. I dont think they are going to have a single nominee anywhere in the country.
McConnell may be proven correct -- more on that in a moment -- but this was still an unwise thing to say. Making such inflammatory comments about fellow conservatives, especially in the

Kentucky: It is now up to you to decide who wins.
The GOP is never happier than when they go after
conservatives like the Tea Party, Sen. Cruz,
or Gov. Palin.
No wonder, they are pushing Romney for a third time.
Mitch McConnell is probably one of the best spokesmen around to rally the T.E.A party people to action. Of course, it is as a hostile provocation, but whatever it takes to get the juices flowing.
If McConnell had been pouring that much vitriol on, say, Harry Reid, we might be well on our way of really mustering a Republican renaissance. Mitch, you have three options - lead, follow, or get the H*ll out of the way. And I really don’t think you are nearly nimble enough to get around to the head of this parade.
Goodbye McConnell!
McConnell has clearly worked with Reid in the past. I wonder what would happen if we returned the favor?
yet we are supposed to vote for this in November
I am totally done with the GOP. Tea Party candidates or nobody.
No wonder, they are pushing Romney for a third time.

MiTT III - That’s what I smelled in the Bushes.
“I think we are going to crush them everywhere, Mr. McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, said.
Then he got out the newly minted RINO Platform Pledge.
“We stand for Moderate Consensus in All. We believe government should be Medium in size.
” While our opponents, the Tea Party, believe in original Constitutional principles, and our Congressional Comrades, the Democrats, believe in a living, breathing, changeable document, we believe that Parchment is Stretchy, but does have a breaking point.
” We believe that whatever our Colleagues on the other side of the aisle choose to focus on will be our choice as well, and we will take a slightly different stance. We believe that if our opponents, the Tea party, bring up a subject of interest to them, that they not be allowed to voice it.
” We agree to keep our rhetoric toned. We seek maximum exposure in the media and when interviewed insist on keeping our responses calm, measured, and vague.
” In debates, we will keep to our agreed-upon formats: liberal moderators only, liberal choice of topics only, and our argument structure will never stray from Slight Disagreement, Strong Sentence of Disagreement, Walking It All Back, and Curling in Fetal Ball.
“That ought to crush these Tea Party freaks.”
Mitch must have paid somebody to cook up that Crush The Tea Party slogan which he uses eight times a day. Mitch you are needlessly kicking an ever expanding Hornets Nest. You are about to get stung.
What a pig.
I dont think they are going to have a single nominee anywhere in the country.
Whenever the idea of the “GOPe” is brought up to someone IN the GOPe, they claim ignorance. They claim they have no idea what you’re talking about.
The quote by McConnell above is an “us vs them” quote. It clearly describes “them” as the Tea Party. The question id ask him is “who do you describe as ‘us’?”
Not a single nominee = not a single person for whom to vote.
Wow...I just got my Matt Bevin bumper sticker in the mail today. I was debating whether or not to put it on my car. My car, stays parked at the airport, a lot!
After reading this? I just went and put it on my bumper.
F U McConnell, and the slimy RINO you rode in on!
The war that has been festering for DECADES has finally been brought out into the open by TED CRUZ.
And yes, I am shouting.
Now we know why no Republicans in Congress, excepting a few, are upset with the IRS being used for political purposes. They like the idea of suppressing the Tea Party. McConnell can talk big like this because Obama and the IRS have his back. He can’t lose.
Of course, if McConnell were to lose the primary, he’d probably come back as a Dim, like Arlen Specter, the late lamented. He’s in it only for his own power and personal prestige.
And, sadly, there is more than one like him floating in the National Republican punchbowl.
He should have got Schwarzenegger to say it (if Arnold is still a Republican) ...
I was gonna say that’
This old bastard is working extra hard to get the boot. WTF goes on in his demented mind is anybodies guess.
