Here’s an Oxford Dictionaries blog stating the spelling was often used by the New York Times and the Washington Post up until the fateful Dan Quayle Day That Changed History. After that, it was never seen again in either newspaper:

There is a very good reason why Obama had trouble spelling the word respect. The word is not in his vocabulary. He simply doesn’t know what it is. He has no respect for anyone. Now, “contempt” is a word I am absolutely certain he could spell.
Republicans are expected to have brains and democrats are expected to stay stupid because the Party depends on it.
I always thought it was “ RESPCT, what my brudda means to me, RESPCT, take out the PCT, sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me...”
Of course, back then, we didn’t have Lyrics.com to tell us exactly what the lyrics were. So, I just sang it like I “heard” it.
I remember seeing Aretha Franklin singing that on the D.C. Mall once during a Cure Cancer rally. I’d taken my junior high school daughter to D.C.to see the sites. Just happened to be the weekend of the rally.
