Brady Law Has Done Little To Keep Guns Out Of Criminals' Hands
Investor's Business Daily ^ | March 3, 2014 | John R. Lott Jr.

Posted on 03/05/2014 2:14:02 PM PST by neverdem

Last Friday marked the 20th anniversary of the so-called Brady Law, a federal gun control in honor of James Brady, Ronald Reagan's former press secretary who was wounded in John Hinckley's assassination attempt.

Since it requires background checks on all guns purchased from federally licensed firearms dealers, gun control advocates celebrated the law's purported effectiveness.

The description by the Capitol newspaper The Hill was typical: "The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, which took effect 20 years ago Friday, has blocked more than 2 million firearm sales, preventing 'countless' killings and other crimes, gun control advocates said at an event to mark the anniversary ... ."

On Friday, the Brady Campaign claimed that half those blocked from purchasing a gun — over 1 million — were felons.

Impressive numbers. But, alas, both are gross exaggerations.

In reality, the "Brady Checks" are quite ineffective in stopping criminals from getting guns. There are actually very few hard-core criminals that are stupid enough to even try to buy a gun from a dealer that does a background check...

--snip--

In fact, a 2004 National Academy of Sciences panel concluded that the Brady background checks did not reduce violent crime, not even a single category of violent crime. Later national studies have not found a beneficial effect either.

If the criminal background checks that private companies did on employees had these errors, they would be sued out of existence...

When you come across the emotional boob who says: "But if we can save only one life..."

Ask them: "What if the effect is jut the opposite? What if an innocent person is denied their right to self defense and winds up dead"?

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that most gungrabbers don't know that your local cops have no duty to protect John Q. Public.

So, just how many of these felons were arrested and sent to prison for their attempt to buy a gun?

The only way to keep guns out of criminal hands is to keep those hands in prison. All free men should own weapons as they please.

Background checks exist ONLY for making illegal databases of gun owners.

The Brady folks and their ilk have the blood of the teachers and children of Sandy Hook on their hands.

ocal cops have no duty to protect John Q. Public.

Just like the armored vehicles that your local sheriff is given by the government is ONLY to intimidate the public and protect the cops. There is no way that they are going to get out of that APC with an active shooter on the loose. Don't believe me? How many cops stormed the building to protect the defenseless kids from Adam Lanza? ZERO! They all waited until they were fairly sure the coast was clear.

Amen. If they can’t be trusted with a gun out of prison, they shouldn’t be released.

If someone is being released from prison, you’re assuming that they are ready to rejoin society and should have the same rights to self defense as everyone else.

And that is the ONLY reason they should be released. Child sexual predators have a high rate of recidivism and should NEVER be released.

I’ve got a cousin in prison for beating an old man to death with a baseball bat. He isn’t eligible for parole for 20 years and that’s too soon in my opinion. As far as I’m concerned he shouldn’t be eligible at all.

"Brady Law Has Done Little To Keep Guns Out Of Criminals' Hands"

Saying the law has done little indicates that [indeed] it has done something. Does anyone know what it has done exactly?

Is it now somehow impossible for a really bad guy with violence in his heart to get a gun?

I believe that is a very small and elite club, the numbers of which approach zero. The NRA publishes the statistics every now and then, and there aren't many.

So let us look at these numbers, a relatively typical year. Out of the 76,142 initial denials in the federal system only 44 individuals were prosecuted and only 13 were convicted of illegally trying to purchase a gun when they were prohibited from doing so.

Just like the FReeper who's tag line reads "Proudly posting without reading the articles" or something to that effect, I found the above after I read the whole article. As I said - a small and elite club.

Christmas day shortly after the Sandy Hook shooting. A man in upstate NY set a fire and ambushed firemen, killing at least 2 of them.

Turned out that the shooter had done time in prison for beating his own grandmother to death with a hammer. The media fixated on how he got the gun but few if any even asked why he was out of prison.

It's been worse than useless...it's been DEADLY. Several women have requested guns to protect themselves from estranged husbands who had threatened violence -- and then been MURDERED before the stupid "waiting period" was up.

Where is the damn "WAITING PERIOD" for freakin' abortions!?! AGGRH. Sarah Brady is such a villain.
