Has Mitch McConnell Jumped the Shark?
The Jefferson Review ^ | 3/2/14 | By Theresa Camoriano

The phrase “jump the shark” comes from a scene in the TV series Happy Days in which Fonzie puts on his leather jacket, swim trunks and water skis and then ski-jumps over a shark. The phrase indicates a turning point, which marked the beginning of the show’s decline. At that point, the formerly sweet, entertaining show had become so ridiculous that it had become a caricature of itself. The same seems to have happened to Senator McConnell with his latest outrageous “fraud alert” attack on challenger Matt Bevin.

While McConnell’s accusations have been shown repeatedly to be false, as indicated at MudslingingMitch.com, that has not deterred McConnell. After all, what does the truth matter when you are trying to create a dirty smear? Instead of accepting the truth that Bevin is a good, decent person and elevating the level of discussion in the campaign to inspire the people and lead them in a positive direction, McConnell is doubling down on the dirt, with the latest hit piece being printed on yellow paper with heavy black type, attempting to appear to be a fraud alert from an official agency. (A fraudulent “fraud alert”?)

This ridiculous “fraud alert” attack should be beneath the dignity of a sitting Senator, not to mention being beneath the dignity of anyone who seeks the public trust or, for that matter, of anyone with any sense of dignity at all. While people understand that politics can be brutal and that political campaigns may involve some bending of the truth, this hit piece goes far beyond anything the voting public expects of a sitting Senator – just as the Fonz went way beyond audience expectations in the shark-jumping episode.

Why is McConnell willing to take such a risk? Because his negatives are so high that his only hope for success is to raise the negatives of his opponents in order to bring them down below his level, making the voters so despise his competitors that they will be willing to vote for him.

So, instead of elevating the level of discourse in the campaign, inspiring the electorate and encouraging them to rally around good plans and good causes as a real leader should, McConnell is busy rolling around in the mud trying to drag everyone else down below his pitifully low level.

Jesse Benton, McConnell’s campaign manager, already has admitted that he held his nose when he went to work for McConnell. If this latest “fraud alert” was Benton’s idea, then maybe he is doing worse than just holding his nose; maybe he is actively working to sink the McConnell campaign. Who nose? Whether the McConnell campaign is being sabotaged from within or whether McConnell simply is so desperate that he is willing to risk being sullied by his own slime campaign, the result is equally pathetic.

Sadly, once you “jump the shark”, you just keep skiing downstream.

This is what we are dealing with here. The GOPe will stop at nothing. McConnell (IMO) has the moral qualities of a DemocRat. A sort of Harry Reid without the balls.

As I have repeatedly stated. I will not be blackmailed into voting for McConnell in the general.

Texas may not be a great bellweather. Guys like Bevin are much better candidates than what we have in Texas. Of all the incumbents being primaried, Cornyn has the least to worry about. There is no polished, funded opposition. If we see him get under 50% and a real contender in the run off, than things look really, really good for conservatives.

I have a Freeper on another thread railing me for slamming the GOP. Apparently I’m a Democrat for doing that.

Who knew?

Pretty obvious to me what our actual problem is.

Midge and Cornball fight conservatives dirtier and meaner than they fight Dims.

Texas needed/needs someone as strong as Matt Bevin to run against Cornball. No one seems to have the funding or organization that Bevin does, running against Cornholio :(

Praying for a miracle and keeping our fingers and toes crossed down here in TX.

A sort of Harry Reid without the balls.

Nanzi P. has Harry’s balls in her pocket.
Harry didn’t miss them.

It's been a phrase for 20 years. Do they really still have to explain it?

Well...*every* year at Thanksgiving every TV station and newspaper has to explain over and over ad nauseum that a stuffed turkey has to be fully cooked or you get sick & you have to wash your hands after handling it.
