At the moment the square in front of the regional administration building is packed with people holding Russian flags.

The protesters elected Pavel Gubarev, the commander of the Donbass People’s Militia, as the Donetsk region’s new Governor.

For his part, he called on the demonstrators to set up a tent camp in the square in front of the regional administration.

Thousands of Odessa residents have gathered under Russian and Soviet flags in the Kulikovo Field, the Interfax-Ukraine reports Saturday.

The demonstration organizers state there are some 20,000 people, the police says they have counted about 5,000 participants.

The purpose of the meeting is to elect an empowered and authorized representative to speak with the authorities on behalf of the Odessa residents.

In Kharkov, the largest city in eastern Ukraine, pro-Russian protesters managed to break through the cordon of Maidan supporters and captured the government building. The storming was accompanied by clashes and shooting, RBC daily reports.

In fact, we are likely to rue the day we brought Romania and Bulgaria into NATO, as those countries stand in the way of Russian reach into Serbia.

During the Cold War, Bulgaria was the most zealously pro-Soviet of the satellite countries, but I don't know if that means anything for their current attitudes. They lost their bit of Aegean coastline after WWI so they don't have that to offer Russia.

Russia poses as the friend and protector of Serbia when it serves Russian interests and ignores them the rest of the time. Since Montenegro became independent, Serbia doesn't have an Adriatic coastline so they can't offer a Mediterranean port (ships from the Crimea must pass through the Straits to get to the Mediterranean).

Most of Moldova was part of Romania until 1940. The strip east of the Dniester may be pro-Russian but I don't know about the rest of the country.

Obama is an historic godsend to Putin in this Ukrainian affair.

Without Obama Putin could not have pulled it off.

Has Obama commented on how all this is affecting the GLBT community yet?
