Anti-government demonstrators set up barricades and started fires in Venezuela's capital on Monday despite calls from within the opposition to rein in protests in which at least 12 people have died in the OPEC nation.
Traffic slowed to a crawl around Caracas, and many people stayed home, as protestors burned trash and debris along main avenues a day after opposition leader Henrique Capriles called on them to keep demonstrations peaceful.
"We know we're bothering people but we have to wake up Venezuela!" student Pablo Herrera, 23, said next to a barricade in the affluent Los Palos Grandes district of Caracas.
Authorities in the convulsed border state of Táchira confirmed the latest death from the unrest: a man hit by a stray bullet watching a protest from the balcony of his apartment.
The most sustained unrest in Venezuela for a decade is the biggest challenge to President Nicholas Maduro's 10-month-old government, though there is no sign it will topple him nor affect oil shipments from Latin America's biggest exporter.
Capriles, 41, was invited to meet Maduro in the afternoon as part of a gathering of mayors and governors that could open up communications between the two sides but may not be able to stem the nearly two weeks of street violence......
Capriles, who has seen his leadership of the opposition upstaged by Lopez's street activism, lashed Maduro for talking "rubbish" and said he was unsure if he would attend the meeting scheduled for the afternoon at presidential palace.

People are taking a stand for their freedom and future, even if Reuters can't seem to get it.
One opposition blogger posted over the weekend that the country is on the verge of economic collapse and that Maduro was unable to govern it.
He expects a bad road ahead, how bad we shall see....
Meanwhile the Chavez family has kept the presidential palace as their own.
Socialists always look out for the little folks by impoverishing everybody but the elite few.
Wonder if that POS Sean Pen will go down there and fight with the government?
he is an actor ...
No more updates on the boy allegedly being raped by government thugs?
If you read the post from Daniel on “Venezuela News and Views” yesterday, that’s all the information I saw.
The thugs used a rifle to assault him according to what I saw.
Because they know or think they can away with it. Just like the bad cops in this country.
OMG! how did you find that blog?
That’s the FIRST thing that needs to happen when Maduro is tossed: Go into the palace and drag them out by their hair.
These are the Venezuela blogs on my “blogroll”
The third blog on that list from Daniel has just posted some of the latest information that adds a lot to what the MSM dishes out on Venezuela.
I fear this is coming very, very soon to a nation near you. :(
“...Go into the palace and drag them out by their hair...”
I remember watching film of the Romanian communist thug Ceacescu getting dragged out of HIS palace, stood up against the wall, and given a “fair, equal” dose of “People’s Justice”.
It’s what should happen to ALL socialist/communist thugs.
I don’t even want them stood up and shot - I think that would give them more importance than they deserve. They should be publicly humiliated by being unceremoniously tossed out of the people’s house and ridiculed by the public.
Sir, respectfully, I have to disagree with you.
Never leave an enemy standing behind you. Especially THIS enemy. They never go away unless they’re MADE to go away.
How many years have the people of this Earth who believe in Freedom been fighting this ideology? Since what, 1848, when Marx and Engels wrote their idiotic manifesto?
He’d just regroup with another cabal and come back one way or another.
Ceacescu won’t ever be back to terrorize anyone.
