Presbyterian churches are teaching that their Jewish neighbors are inherently racist and prone to abusing the rights of others.
Thats the key message of PCUSAs new congregational study guide, Zionism Unsettled. Released by its Israel-Palestine Mission Network, the guide explores the theological and ethical exceptionalism of Jewish and Christian Zionism, which have been sheltered from open debate despite the intolerable human rights abuses rooted in their core beliefs.
To be clear, this is no mere attack on Israeli policies, but rather on the very legitimacy of the Zionist enterprise.
PCUSA has theologically resurrected the UNs infamous 1975 Zionism is Racism resolution (later rescinded). It puts all on notice that lovers of Zion -- Jews and Christians alike -- are bigots.
PCUSAs depiction of Zionism as a sin fills a niche in the global political campaign casting Israel as an illegitimate colonial/historic mistake. It also means that a major (albeit ageing and shrinking) mainline Protestant denomination declares the majority of Jews to be a bunch of morally decadent untermenschen, worthy of condemnation and disparagement. Will the faithful now be taught that Jews are people like us, just a little less so?

PCUSA is hardly representitive of the “US Church”.
Because the Muslims knocked down the World Trade Center.
They’ll lament and agonize over the rights of homosexuals but create distorted or cherry picked tales about Jewish aspirations.
Their theology is all screwy for one thing. They’re asking to allegorize or spiritualize away a lot of very specific, yet unfulfilled prophecy. I humbly submit they’re setting up to duke it out with God — not very smart. It will result in loss of blessing and loss of general godliness if not willingly corrected from within. The specific Jewish mission in the world hasn’t ended even though God has given a new covenant for Christians. In a way this was an inevitable outcome of one strain of reformation theology. I posit that, e.g., conservative Baptists have their eyes on straighter with respect to this detail which is why we see such blessings upon that segment of the bible belt church. They don’t have to get everything right, but the Jews comprise a very important witness of God’s work in the world.
That’s “an” US church.
Like I just pointed out, however, it isn’t characteristic of Bible Belt theology. Even Jewish scholars who would never dream of yielding to Christian theology characterize America’s bible belt as Judaism’s safety belt.
Alderstein should know. He spends a lot of time sucking up to mainstream liberal Christian denominations, though he privately admits that their specialty is telling “big, giant whoppers”!
Christianity, even the more warped forms of it, is fascinating to the Jews, though they won’t admit it.
Christianity, even the more warped forms of it, is fascinating to the Jews, though they won’t admit it... kind of like you won’t usually find Baptists who say they drink!
Only among Jews in what used to be Christian countries.
The same phenomenon exists among Jews with Islam in Muslim countries.
Both are likely just self-defense.
Wherever they can’t isolate themselves completely from Christians. Even in Israel that isn’t possible.
And, a theology lecturer I once heard pointed out that most Jews who grow up in Catholic neighborhoods end up being Protestants.
Yes, and nowhere near representative of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. The big difference being that we believe the bible is the word of God.
I believe the headline references a US Church, I don’t think the author believes PCUSA represents all US Christians. Would have been better if the a was in there
Also, Christianity goes to a different level than Islam does. Christianity tells of a man who was also God. It is made no secret every Christmas season. Islam elevates Mohammed to prophethood and deems Jesus of Nazareth the same. And yet the more “distorted” theology from the Pharisaical Jewish point of view ends up being the most peaceful one. I am forever amused at how Jewish rabbis will claim that Christianity was nothing but bad news for them except in America where it was good news! Is this just a self protective lie to flatter American Christians? Or maybe are they making out the Lord’s blessing through Christians to be less than it really was, even when Christianity carried itself in a dicey manner? I mean every single murder in the Inquisition sucked, make no bones about it, but I think if a Jew had to choose between being there and being in a Marxist regime, the Marxist regime would not win.
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong but doen’t the PCUSA support and approve of homosexuals?
It follows that when an organization accepts one form of perversion (homosexuality) they will eventually swallow and then spew forth the entire liberal agenda (in this case the “Jews are bad and need to be eradicated” portion of the agenda)
PCUSA is not a Christian church. They have turned their back on the bible and on God.
Well anyhow. When one drills into the heart of the brouhaha, even PCUSA is complaining about method rather than philosophy. It is complaining the current incarnation of this Jewish movement is tainted with baser motives.
Even given theological quibbles, I think they’re majoring in minors here, by broad brushing the entire Zionist movement (which is why the earlier document was rescinded, for excellent reason). The more typical Israeli Jewish move is to try to be peaceful with hostile neighbors, and that doesn’t mean words they disagree with, this means physical hostility as in hurling stones, firing guns, launching rockets etc. Most will act militantly against those neighbors only if and when a siege gets to ridiculous proportions.
This being a target of attack is an ironic sign of God’s promise towards the Jews. The devil hates this promise. The devil will try to undermine it. The devil never will quite succeed.
Got to be careful in calling a church that has doctrine problems not Christian.
It’s an easy, and fallacious, recourse.
Christian means trusting on Christ to save your eternal life. Period.
Because they are socialists.
