In the early days of the Obama administration, smart power was all the rageand not just on the foreign policy scene. In April 2009, National Public Radio reported how one Allentown, Pennsylvania, mother was saving more than a hundred dollars each month on her electric bill. Tammy Yeakels power company, PPL Energy, had helpfully installed a smart meter on her home that could monitor her power usage in real time. The meter uploaded that information to PPLs website, so she could identify peak usage times during the day

I do think that will happen sooner rather than later. If the govn. can “force” you to buy health insurance, they can dictate to power companies to keep their customers at “x” temperature since the power company will have the ability to do that, and will, and force you to do it or put a penalty on you just like they can put a penalty on you for not buying medical insurance.
This is the communist way - everyone gets “x”, except for the communists who run the system - they can have anything they want.
Should be good for generator sales.
I got a call two weeks ago from BGE in Maryland to schedule my appointment. We declined and sent a letter to them telling them to stay off our property. They replied that there is no opt out, but since the utility commission has not decreed that they are mandatory, we’re off the list...for now.
Naw. They just set the thermostat for you.
There are those who still gawk with dropped jaws when they're told those in government want to control, tax and regulate your every move.
“I have had one of these for 10 years. Still trying to figure out why people are afraid of them.”
We’ve had one for a number of years too. And our experience was just as you say. But they are the “camel’s nose under the tent,” because now they are “asking us to voluntarily” let them put devices on our major gas and electricity consumers so that they can “control them” when they are experiencing “capacity problems.” The plum they offer is “lower rates,” but you can just imagine where this is all going. Since they are RF devices, I just imagine that you can “shield them,” but as soon as they find out that they can’t communicate with your meters they will be out to see what the problem is. Unfortunately, this wonderful technology we have today has a serious downside. Soon the cops won’t need radar, they will just sit beside the road and “ask your car to tell them how fast it’s going.” So much for the 5th Amendment. And even now, all cars have “event recorders” that will tell the LEO’s just what was going on prior to a crash, and the courts have held that it “isn’t your information to keep from them.”
In Michigan you have to call the electric company and tell them you do not want to participate - not many people realize that. Then you have to talk with someone in a special dept. who asks you for your reasons. Probably won’t be long before Soetoro makes an EO that prevents anyone from opting out. It’s the major urban areas, I believe, that will be forced to do this.
And WHEN did Illinois slip this one by us? Crooks, all of them!
I spent my entire life save the last four years in Michigan until Jenny Grandstand forced me to move. Following MI current politics, I’m kind of surprised smart meters are being shoved down your throats.
Don’t be fooled - The Nerd has done some good things, definitely an improvement over Grandstand, but that ain’t saying much for Michigan. How can you stand it in Maryland?
Bump
Well said. On a related topic, I’ve been looking at rocket mass heaters and masonry heaters lately. There’s no clay for “cob” (for the hippie aspect) or old steel oil drums in my part of the country for the rocket mass heater, but I’ll probably build a rocket mass heater with a “bell design” (from Russian masonry heaters) modification and based more on contemporary masonry—maybe something stealthy and somewhat portable.

That happened here too. Only the wealthy with disposable income get away with privacy.

Have you pulled your main breaker to see what the meter. Saw video a while back where a guy did this, no power to his house at all, and the meter kept turning. So did his neigbbor’s.
Power Company said don’t work about it. It doesn’t mean anything. BTW his bill jumped about 20% after the ‘smart’ meter was installed.
Wonder why.
Sounds like you need to relocate.
No city, rural coop. We get to vote on things like this.
