Republicans in the Senate are struggling to come up with the five votes they'd need to ensure passage on Wednesday of a House bill raising the debt ceiling.
The measure is likely to win support from the upper chamber's 53 Democrats and the two Independents that caucus with Democrats.
But only one Republican, Sen. Mark Kirk (Ill.), has so far said he would back the bill.
The measure needs 60 votes because Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is filibustering the bill over the lack of spending reforms attached to it.
Kirk told The Hill the vote would be close.
I think its narrow," he said.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) is expected to vote yes but told The Hill she was not prepared to announce her position on Wednesday morning.

Oops! I guess we’ll have to wait until snomaggedon is over. Keep calling.
Not at all; I’m just saying we can’t put faith in the American people based on their record of voting.

Cornyn is one of the most conservative* senators ever.
Either that, or it’s primary season in Texas and only Cornyn has the funds to put out that message.
*EVERY politician in Texas is a conservative during primary season.
Ayotte might be the one to work with. She campaigned as a conservative, and backstabbed conservatives before she even finished unpacking when she got to DC. But listening to her in interviews, she sounds just plain dumb. Ir seems that she’ll have to be conservative on something, so maybe it’ll be the budget.
That airhead looks to John McCain-Linseed Grahamnasty for advice.
You might as well count her vote as you would Chuck Schumers.
Cloture vote still open. Cornyn still doesn’t have enough GOP votes for Reid.
On;y 3 Reps so far.
“
Cristina Marcos @cimarcos
Cloture vote started 30m ago. Senate R ldrship, Corker & Murkowski huddling in middle of floor. Cruz standing off to side talking to Coats.”
Absolutely, and genius on Cruz’s part. Force the Rino’s out of the shadows of the senate and make them own their votes. If we want a strong conservative party to represent us we must purge congress of the Rinos who vote with the democrats. Then a conservative party can be a united force to deal with the commies.
Cruz is at this point the only potential presidential candidate that I would have any interest in voting for.
Cornyn and McConnell are telling Corker and Murkowski to take one for the team.
The TITLE of the article was penned by liberal at The Hill. It doesn't mean anything.
Maybe, it's the Dems who are "whipping" for Republican votes and can't find any?
“Manu Raju
McConnell and Cornyn both voted to break a filibuster on the debt limit”
That just leaves one more I believe.
In spite of the big talk show hosts and some Freepers, I don’t think America is paying attention. Most don’t even know what cloture means.
“Maybe, it’s the Dems who are “whipping” for Republican votes and can’t find any?”
Maybe, if you’re naïve and haven’t been watching what’s been happening over the past several years.
Cornyn was whipping votes and failed. So he had to vote for Cloture. So did McConnell.
You can bet they’ve got this sewn up or they wouldn’t have stuck their traitorous necks out. Once again it’s clear what these guys think of conservative princlples. Both must go!
