Snow Blind. When Americans look at Russia, they see what they want to see. And that's dangerous.

Two of Russia's most famous dissidents are visiting the United States. I speak, of course, of Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina, members of the feminist conceptual art group known as Pussy Riot who were recently released from jail by President Vladimir Putin. The U.S. media have been raving. "Pussy Riot gals stun Brooklyn crowd with powerful speech," blared the New York Post about the duo's appearance at a charity concert in New York this week. "Pussy Riot stole the show from Madonna," was the verdict from Time. They put in a bravado performance on the Colbert Report, and even had the New Yorker gushing about their presumed artistic achievements. Pretty impressive.

There's just one problem. Most of the adoring coverage of the two Pussy Riot stars presumes that their protest is having an enormous impact on the political situation in their home country. If not, why are we (and Madonna) paying such inordinate attention to them?

In fact, though, there is little evidence that they have any sort of influence on Russian public opinion at all. Most Russians regard Pussy Riot with outright hostility. As one recent public opinion survey revealed, the number of Russians who view the prison sentence the two women received as either fair or too soft has actually grown in the two years since they went to jail: the figure is now 66 percent. (A reminder: Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina were convicted on charges of "hooliganism" after performing an impromptu anti-Putin concert in a Moscow cathedral in 2012.)

Indeed, the remaining members of Pussy Riot have now expelled Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina from the group for sundry minor misdeeds

This is a mistake. That hasn't been "Pussy Riot" which has expelled but "Voina" ("The war"). That museum pregnant sex episode was staged by "Voina".

The offense which initially landed P**** Riot in the spotlight was the gross desecration of an altar in a Russian Orthodox Church.

I would not expect most of the Russian populace to react well to that at all.

Leaving aside whatever Pussy Riot supposedly stands for, I believe Americans would be wise to remember that many, if not most, people in this love bondage, they clamor for chains. Many people who claim to love freedom are neck deep in religious traditions that enslave. We see the bondage impulse played out in Scripture in the nation of Israel in the Old Testament and we certainly see it all around us in our country today. Millions of our fellow citizens applaud the loss of their own freedom. Those who don’t clap probably can’t work up the energy to even care. It’s even more true in foreign countries without an ethic of freedom. Many who claim to love liberty are actually libertines, not freedom-loving patriots willing to accept the concomitant duties and responsibilities.

When Russia was throwing everyone in the Gulag, the Left admired them, but when the Russians refuse to cowtow to homosexuals, the Left goes livid.

Most Russians are sick of Western arrogance and patronizing. They like things the way they are and Putin - with a record 65% personal approval rating - reflects this desire for stability and no experiments.

And he’s presided over a successful Olympics. After having seen the Russian figure skating/ice dancing team - I applauded them. My reaction was the same as Putin’s. You have world class athletes who show the best of Russia!

I too, would like to see more democracy in Russia. But Westerners don’t help themselves by telling Russians to be more like them. Particularly their outraged sermonizing about gays! What makes them so special?

Russians are conservative. There is no mood for the kind of destabilizing post-modernism so much in vogue in the West. Russia has had plenty of revolution. No one much likes the changes occurring in the West. And its good Russia is following its own path.

The real agenda behind “tolerance” is rape, and behind “diversity” is division and isolation to neuter future ability to drop an effective complaint in a court.

Russians know that any hint of so called “anti racism” in their land will mean open border exploitation by the Chinese gangster cockroaches.
