A State Department contractor charged with leaking top-secret information about North Korea to Fox News entered a guilty plea Friday and agreed to serve a 13-month prison term.

During an 80-minute hearing at U.S. District Court, Stephen Kim pled guilty to a single felony count of disclosing national defense information to an unauthorized person, Fox News reporter James Rosen.Kim admitted providing Rosen with the contents of a top-secret intelligence report on North Korean intentions to carry out nuclear tests. The contractor acknowledged that he and Rosen stepped out of their offices at State Department headquarters for a short meeting nearby on the morning of June 11, 2009.

Within a couple of hours, Rosen published a story on the Fox News website reporting that U.S. intelligence had concluded “through sources in North Korea” that the secretive communist nation planned to carry out four nuclear tests in response to an expected U.N. resolution.

That’s as may be, FRiend. But he was singled out for actual punishment, and it fits the long running narrative of Obama and his minions detesting Fox News. How many leaks have NOT been pursued by this admin? Including the illegal IRS leaking of conservative group applications *reported by the recipient, BTW, who confirms that not one leaked file was from a liberal group)?

Thank you. Precisely the point I was trying to make in reply #1.

Exactly. The Hussein admin finally found a security breach it could punish. Strangely enough, the one leak they found punishable was to Fox News. It’s not that they shouldn’t have punished this one, it’s that there are at least dozens of others that they should’ve.

And why exactly couldn’t we be told that North Korea was going to be doing nuclear tests? What was the big secret?

I don’t say we couldn’t be, I haven’t considered the matter and its ramifications in detail. That wasn’t the point I was focussing on. But surely if we could, and I don’t yet say one way or the other, leaking to a news organisation isn’t the way to do it. But again, that’s not the point under discussion. The point is the selective, the very selective, punishment of a security leak.

The DoD is often accused of over-classifying information. And we likely do err on the side of caution, which doesn’t bother me too much, given our work. I do wish that there was an ongoing declassification review process to routinely declassify material that is no longer classified. But that’s not a priority, it seems.

State, however, seems to classify routinely and for no legitimate or well-informed rationale.

Can anyone think of similar GWBush era prosecutions? The press would be howling which stopped the Bush Admin from doing this. Jug Ears has his stooge press saying nothing here

The Obama Justice Department goes after those who leak to the press. This is all this Kim fellow did. He was not a spy nor did he impact national security. The Obungu Junta also goes after whistle blowers with a vengeance. Petty tyrants.

All leaks of TS or TS SCI should be prosecuted. The secret bombings were another example. A man who pulled me off a chopper with two GSW’s and actually slid my ass through my own blood testified before the 93rd . I am sorry, but; he lost my respect. We signed TS agreements in mid 68 that we would say nothing for at least 20 years or until it was declassified. I damn sure did not run my mouth about putting in crates of 82 mm mortar ammo -”Eldest Son.” In fact, we hated those choppers coming in with that load to cache as Charlie damn sure knew where we were fast.

IMHO, about 95% of the stuff the NSA does violates the Constitution and should be shut down hard.

Given that, I think Snowden is a patriot.

Patriots do not commit treason. Snowden clearly diseminated TS and/or TS SCI INTEL regardless of whether the info he had access to was obtained by this nation’s NSA illegally or by whom. He had other ways to inform those in power of the very things he felt were unconstitutional/illegal. Whether a whistle blower or one who met secretly with a Senate INTEL committee type-he damn sure knowingly contacted the same hate America punk Assange or whatever. The little fag Manning who wants to be a girl, will most likely find things a bit hard ass in Leavenworth. He is no hero.
