It's been almost comical to watch the liberal sports media's obvious arousal over what they deem the heroic effort by the Northwestern football team to unionize. I say almost comical because this effort is something that could change the face of college athletics forever, and not necessarily for the good either. It is also based on a fundamental flaw. And as is the case with liberals in general, the MSNBC wannabes at ESPN - and other outlets - have no situational awareness of the potential unintended consequences if this is successful. They are simply driven by the leftist reflexive hatred of "the man," which in big-time college athletics, means fat-cat athletic directors and coaches apparently - and of course the NCAA. You know, all the people "exploiting" these poor put upon college athletes.

While I’m no fan of the NCAA, this is not the answer.
What about walk-ons? If they claim their scholarship represents income, have they been paying taxes on it?
Scholarships are income, they are just tax-exempt to the extent they are used to pay tuition and other educational expenses (books, computers, fees to the university,...). If the scholarship is generous enough to pay anything beyond that, be it pocket money or full room and board, the extra is subject to Social Security, Federal and state income taxes, and students do pay those taxes on the taxable part of their scholarships.

Won’t happen....women’s sports will not be cut
Title IX pretty much requires schools to offer the same number of scholarships for womens sports as mens sports. Schools repeatedly lose lawsuits over Title IX.
The sports that will get cut the most if athletes go union will be the revenue sports: Football and mens basketball. Especially football...since the most scholarships are in that sport. No school will want to face the court costs to cut womens sports....too much legal precedent already against colleges in Title IX cases
Well I’ll say a few things about your post:
First, you haven’t contemplated the ramifications of this: if revenue producing athletes are put in a categoy totally different than non rev athletes, then Title IX will be defacto changed dramatically. Second, your assumption that unionized players will get cut is very odd. The opposite is likely to happen. As for the court costs .there’s gonna be a ton of those regardless.
let them go work at football or basketball at age 18 or 19 and see how well that goes....
the minute they unionize, I won't be a paying customer ever again....not a season ticket, not a contribution, not a single pair of cheaply made sports gear...
