I can’t recall which one but I have read that one of the top Nazi’s turned out to be a Russian or at least Communist spy.

Anyone know who it was?

It was Martin Bormann but he didn't work for the Communists. He worked for their bosses.

Bormann has been alleged to have been a Soviet mole. He was merely a semi-competent yes-man, which is how he managed to get permission to try to flee to the west. He was killed apparently a random victim of the chaos, a photo of his skull can be found online. There is of course a bit of a conspiracy theory community which claims those aren’t his remains, that the eyewitness who identified the body lied, etc etc.

There is another story about a German who emerged from the Bunker after the fall of Berlin (or at least that part of Berlin), and stood in a trenchcoat, waiting for something. At some point a big Soviet auto was brought up, someone opened the door for him, he got in, and went into retirement in the USSR — but this story is based on a single eyewitness.

You’re thinking of Canaris, who was the head of the 3rd Reich’s equivalent of the CIA, and an anti-Nazi from the start.

His name was Mueller and I believe he was instrumental in setting up part of the Gestapo. From what I remember reading, he absolutely adored Stalin’s NKVD and modeled his organization after that.

He actually disappeared into the Soviet Union... and not as a POW.

Read Edward Crankshaw’s 1956 book “Gestapo: Instrument of Tyranny” for a good write-up on the guy.
