Widow tells ‘GMA’: Put theater shooter in prison for life
The Tampa Tribune ^ | January 23, 2014 | Rick Mayer

Posted on 01/23/2014 8:42:56 AM PST by 4Runner

Nicole Oulson told a national television audience today that she wants Curtis Reeves, the man accused of killing her husband in a Wesley Chapel movie theater, to spend the rest of his life in prison.

“He brought an unfair life sentence to me to have to raise my daughter alone, to have to live without the love of my life, for my daughter to grow up without her daddy by her side for graduation and marriage,” Oulson said on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “It was so unnecessary, it was for no reason. So I want him behind bars and to be punished for his senseless act.

From what I’ve read on this, nobody, not even the witnesses, seem to be able to confirm just who threw the popcorn.

Would you suggest a concealed weapon for dealing with knockout game perps?

If someone assaults you for no reason you have every right to defend yourself. Including shooting him. You don't have the right to raise the ante of an argument to a capital offense. And spare me the argument that throwing popcorn constitutes an assault worthy of death!!!

CCW doesn’t mean you get to pick fights over trivial crap, and then use the gun when the person you provoke turns out to be bigger than you or something

No, but the Florida implementation of SYG may do exactly that, which has been my problem with it from the beginning.

The common law standard, both for provocation and for self-defense, is more than adequate to cover all contingencies.

The problem with Florida SYG, as I see it, is that once the preconditions are fulfilled 1) You have a right to be where you are, 2) You need not retreat from a confrontation, then you CAN use deadly force EVEN IF you got into it through your actions.

Florida FReepers, please correct me if I'm wrong.

“I wonder what the comments here would be if the victim was a young black gang member with the shooter was not an ex cop.”

Add in one other part of the story. Lets say the geezer about to be knocked out had walked up, and started an argument about cell phones when the “young black gang member” was basically minding his own business.

If you are CCW, you are not to be the manners police going around menacing and correcting people.

Oh, so now you are the self-proclaimed referee in a fight? Most of the posts are “against me”? Is that what you think posting on FR is all about? Winning or losing the readers? And I never justified any shooting. However, since you bring it up, there is new information provided further on that states the original police report claims the deceased struck the shooter before the shooter fired. The deceased was larger and stronger than the shooter. So there is the possibility that a self-defense claim can be brought.

The deceased would not have missed any of the show if he had been considerate enough to go text in the Lobby and stop irritating other patrons.

It was during the Previews while everyone was milling around and there was only one patron irritated --

The following observations have nothing to do with the shooting. However, I wondered why the deceased father stated he was texting his 3 year old daughter. Now we hear Lexi is 22 months old, ill, and he was apparently texting the sitter.

Local news reported a few days ago that the mother had called out sick from work to spend the day with her husband. Did they go to the movies knowing the daughter was sick?

Again, this has nothing to do with the shooting. Just some curious observations.

Not to speak ill of the dead but dollars to donuts hubby was a hothead "bad boy" type who mouthed off to anyone who came across as an authority figure.

The victim was ex-military so odds are he was not. And I'm sure the widow would give anything not to have the reason to fly to New York and talk about the trigger-happy moron who shot her and her husband.

The retired cop is 71. So if hes convicted of anything in this action it will be a life sentence.

If there's any justice, yes.

“Or refer to themselves in the third-person (”Lexy happy too”)”

Good point. That and the GMA appearance would indicate she’s setting up the civil suit whereby her lawyers will acquire the shooter’s pension, property, life insurance policy, etc. Probably why the shooters on suicide watch. Lacking a criminal conviction the civil suit has less merit. Additionally, if he’s dead his assets would be disbursed to his inheritors before the civil suit goes through. She’d first have to get a judgement against his estate and then his inheritors’ estates.

No, they are snarky chick style observations. Women love cutting each other off at the knees. This behavior is largely why they are not allowed into the Mafia.

However, had the deceased not been anoying Reeves and had not thrown popcorn in his face, he would not be dead.

So if you annoy me I can shoot you?

The bigger question is what was and is now her position on concealed carry (2nd amendment as a hole for that fact)?

What would you think? Her husband got shot by some trigger-happy moron. Would you expect her to take the shooters side?

Wouldn't you agree that people like Reeves who instigate confrontations and then overreact and shoot someone are doing CCW holders, the overwhelming majority of which are stable and responsible people, no service? And that shootings like this are more likely to turn people against CCW laws than for them?
