Last year was tied for the fourth warmest year on record around the world.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Tuesday released its global temperature figures for 2013. The average world temperature was 58.12 degrees (14.52 Celsius) tying with 2003 for the fourth warmest since 1880.
NASA, which calculates records in a different manner, said Tuesday that 2013 was the seventh warmest on record, with an average temperature of 58.3 degrees (14.6 Celsius).
Both agencies said nine of the 10th warmest years on record have happened in the 21st century. The hottest year was 2010.

I find the pronouncement that "the hottest year was 2010" ridiculous. At best, it was a statistical tie with 1998. What are the error bars on that "average temperature" measurement again?
At any rate, temperatures have been flat since the late 1990's, most recently exhibiting a slight dip:

Do you know what year they started keeping record? I couldn’t find it in the article.

And when exactly did "records" begin?
1950?
The records from the 19th century are so spotty that comparing them to today is meaningles.

The way they measure it is BS as well.
I read an article that used a number of temperature stations in Antarctica for years but then abandoned the ones that were “harder to maintain” (because it was so cold) and chose to use the readings from one station to represent the entire area (it was located above an active underwater volcano!)
There is another website that shows how temperature stations that have gotten warmer readings have had significant asphalt paving, airport engine warming nearby, or even grills and burn barrels nearby.

So...according to the scientific consensus, what is the most correct global temperature we should try to achieve?

I guess NOAA has secret records of planet temperature going back to the creation of the plant — (Excactly how long ago that creation was, is another discussion)

I’ll have to remember this the next time I’m shoveling my driveway. By the way, I discovered this winter Chicago has had more snow since 35 years ago...and we still have two months left.

"So...according to the scientific consensus, what is the most correct global temperature we should try to achieve?"72F. Day and night, year 'round, worldwide.
Any variation from that will require the unwashed to turn in their cars, pay carbon taxes, eat kale exclusively and shiver in the darkness of their government issue high rise.

My recollection isn't the best, but I believe there USED to be something like 6500 monitoring stations worldwide, and that has decreased to approx. 1500, with coverage being provided by either interpolation or satellites or something. So tell me again why this crock isn't a crock?

NOAA arbitrarily adjusted past temperatures downward, so of course recent temperatures are going to be higher than the adjusted past temperatures.
Of course, if you go by the actual thermometer readings of the past, we are no warmer today.
