Perhaps the Ukrainians have seen how ugly unfettered protest can get in places like London, Athens, Barcelona, etc. and want no part of it.

Well, we don’t have unfettered protest rights; the First Amendment guarantees we have the right “peaceably to assemble” and no rights not related to abandoning the peace with respect to assembly, which means riots can be suppressed legally. If any country attacks the right to peaceably assemble, then there are ulterior motives.
