US President Barack Obama has said he will not spy on EU leaders or conduct economic espionage, but will continue snooping on ordinary US and EU citizens.
He made the pledge in a TV speech on Friday (17 January) in reaction to the Edward Snowden leaks.
Ive made clear to the intelligence community that unless there is a compelling national security purpose, we will not monitor the communications of heads of state and government of our close friends and allies, he said.
We do not collect intelligence to provide a competitive advantage to US companies or US commercial sectors, he added.
He justified the mass-scale collection of information on ordinary US or foreign nationals telephone calls, however.

They must be laughing their a**es off right now. He “promises”. Like that is believable! LOL.
If you like your privacy, you can keep it! Period!
LOL! Bingo! After five years, anyone who still trusts Barry and takes him at his word has to be a total moron.
“If you like your privacy you can keep your privacy.”
Let’s spy on Obama.
Big of him!
This administration is from the Twilight Zone.
The EU faux outrage is laughable. I am certain they are doing it to us. Sadly, I wish they would reveal Obama’s cell phone calls to Reggie and others. Unfortunately, they can use such information to blackmail our “Commander and Chief”, into making seemingly anti-American like decisions.
He first said “Trust Me” and then qualified all his promises with the phrase, “unless there is a compelling national security purpose”. In other words, NSA will continue to have free reign and no one is exempt from coercion, bribery, criminalization and muzzling.
The Kommunist King Barry/Soros/Snowden take down of our NSA limits them to spying ONLY on Americans (not Communist countries or terrorists). Get a clue, Amerika. Even those WITHIN our NSA approve of this, regardless how they ‘act’ about it.
ALL BETTER NOW!
That guy is way too comfortable going to the dark side, if you catch my drift. Look at those expressions. Good grief!
I sleep so much better knowing our nation is
led by a man of integrity who is so respected
by the by the rest of tne world. Somebody hand
me another beer, please.
The natural consequence of this, where Obama is an unrepentant, world class Liar and everybody knows it, is for our allies to start spying on him, other Americans or organizations of American interest. Some of this counter-spying will purposefully be done so heavy handedly, so openly, that it’s not a secret. That will be the Europeans’ way of saying; “YES!! We are now spying on YOU!! Do you have a problem with that, Mr. Obama? Are you planning to send your Doddering VP Joe Biden or Sec of State John Bloviator Kerry over to Washington, so they can Huff and Puff and Blow the UN right off the map? Well, do you?”
the Brooklyn Bridge is still for sale
He also made no reference to the NSA's most controversial exploits.
He said nothing on its introduction of bugs into commercial encryption software, on burglarising undersea cables, on hacking internet and phone companies, or bugging EU officials.
unless there is a compelling national security purpose.
And those are sooooo hard to dream up when you need an excuse for something
If the EU leaders are at least mouth breathing they should know not to believe one word out of little barry bastard boy’s mouth. He is completely and utterly without honesty. He is a degenerate, lying, drug-addled fascist.
after he’s finished deballing the military, he destroys our ability to collect intel...
whew, good thing we didn’t elect Romney...
LOL!— good one- I hope the teleprompter guy puts that in!
If you like your privacy, you can keep it.
Clown Prince nobama’s “promises” are merely his spewing more lies. Liars lie...that’s what they do.
Ask Angela Merkel what she thinks about Bam and his promises. I heard she personally called him on the phone and cussed him out for bugging her cellphone. Exactly what I would have done.
Its like we have regressed back to high school only its our country. I’m waiting for him to put plastic wrap on Amgela’s toilet seat.
We have met our leader and he is Urkel. :-)
So in other words, he's not promising not to spy. He's just saying he'll find a national security purpose, and whether that purpose is real or not will only be known to him. In other words, business as usual.
And the EU leaders are satisfied with Zero’s promise?
If so, they SHOULD be spied on for being stupid.
So, he lied.
“If you like your secrets, you can keep your secrets.”
America’s Token Idiot Quota Baby
Who really gives a damn what this Kenyan jack-ass says. Every word out of his mouth is a lie.
Our “allies” overseas use his words as a gauge for their own actions, especially whether or not to become more hawkish themselves. So yeah; they care, for now.
I don’t understand. Everything he says is a lie. Just go from there.
I don’t think that when he spoke with Medvedev, he was lying. Remember that?
And some people still think he’s doing a good job.
Never mind that. How about not spying on We The People without a warrant showing probable cause?
That was my first thought, too.
Obama getting banged by EU and supporters....Obama will chill out on EU because he wants that Free Trade deal with the EU done
Of course, he will still spy on Americans
I do. Do you think the Russians believe him?
His actions will speak louder than his words, here; if they match up, then he was not. So far, I do not see Obama erecting any missile shield in Europe, or acting any more provocatively towards Russia than to speak flaccidly of their law against the procurement of homosexual propaganda.
Amazing. He just told us he was going to continue spying on EU leaders and conducting economic espionage!
That's probably true. The exception that proves the rule! :-D
