So....to their way of thinking parental political affiliations, firearm ownership, & religious affiliations, are signs of mental instability.

Exactly, plus other items that could likely be on the school psychologist's check list. Anything politically incorrect could be cause for the child and/or his parents to undergo "re-education," and if that fails...well, there's always a new FEMA(?) facility not that far away which will provide dissidents with food and shelter, if they're lucky.

It's happened before: think USSR, China, North Korea, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, etc., etc.
