When Team USA womens hockey goalie Jessie Vetter takes to the ice next month at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, her mask will be missing something.
Namely, the U.S. Constitution.
The International Olympic Committee, citing regulation, has required the 28-year-old goalie to remove an inscription bearing We the People on a custom mask made for her.
The masks artist, Ron Slater, told FoxNews.com that he believes the IOC sees it as propaganda promoting the United States over other countries anathema to an event in which all athletes are regarded equally.
It ruffles the wrong feathers, I guess, said Slater, who also produces custom masks for NHL players. He said he and Vetter designed the mask which was allowed to retain depictions of the Statue of Liberty, a screaming bald eagle and a USA shield to show figures that scream America.
Thats when Vetter suggested they include the Constitution.
How about We the People? Slater recalls discussing with her. Its only three words. How much damage could they do?

I rarely watch the Olympics. Seems like it all went to hell once they switched to the every-other-2-yr pattern.
So, a team representing a country trying to beat another team representing their country is not allowed to ‘promote’ their country.
If we can’t promote our country, we need to get rid of all those pesky FLAGS all over at the Olympics.
I guess they’ll stop playing the national anthems of the winning teams then, huh?
There should be no flags or national anthems at the medal ceremonies. Only the UN flag and a Barry Manilow song will be allowed.
I wonder if it’s the new pattern or just that with the end of the Cold War, we don’t have the same “us v. them” intensity?
It was always and only USA v. USSR that really mattered. If we beat Portugal or Portugal beat us, who cared?
And When Jim McKay and his crew retired.
You both make excellent points.
Bob Costas and his big mouth ruined it for me.
not all true....i’ve been to the game four times; in ‘96 I was there when Kurt Angle faced off against the Iranian and eventually beat him for the gold...you could touch the intensity in the air and see the hatred for the iranian and iran..

damn teaparty hockey persons!
You’ve inadvertently made my point. I had to google Kurt Angle! (admittedly, I am very much a sports/pop culture ignoramus- just havin’ fun witcha)
They have womans hockey in the Olympics?
Why?
One of the most ridiculous things I have heard lately
Barry Manilow is fat too nationalistic and militaristic... they will play Kenny G
We need a women’s hockey league in America.
lol
This is actually very reasonable and it was handled properly, assuming you read the article and it is truthful.
"It is our understanding that this is not an issue about the patriotic nature of the image depicting the U.S Constitution," Koch said. "The adjustment was necessary because the image did not meet IOC guidelines. It contained wording, which is not allowed on uniforms for any sports at the Olympic games."
Vetters alterations -- she was also required to remove a depiction of the Olympic rings and a Wisconsin Badgers logo, a nod to the University of Wisconsin, her alma mater -- are not without precedent.
Four years ago, U.S. goalies Ryan Miller and Jonathan Quick had to change their masks. Miller had to remove the phrase Miller Time, and Quick had to drop the words Support our troops.
No scandal here folks, move along. No wording allowed, probably because of sponsorships and the like, although it is an example of the tendency of bureaucrats to churn out rule upon rule for everything.
We need a womens hockey league in America.
Yes, in bikinis, ok the goalie can wear a one piece.
