Years ago, I had a friend who worked at a Loehman’s store. She’d call me and tell me to “get right over here” when something came in she thought I’d like. One day it was a floor-length Paco Rabani vest woven from plastic discs, $2200 original price tag, Stunning, honest it was. Looked great on me, but where would anyone wear it? Passed it up at $25. She thought I was nuts.
I still have a couple of 25-yr-old silk blouses I bought there, excellent quality that I can’t buy at any price today. Maybe you can but I can’t.
I loved Loehman’s. Designer clothes at deep deep discounts, what was not to love?
R.I.P.

I loved Loehmans when they were online as Smart Bargains and used to buy designer stuff online all the time. Then Smart Bargains was run by Rue La La and then sold to a watch company I think.
Haven’t shopped Loehmans since they were Smart Bargains but used to get some really good designer deals off that website. I have a Prada handbag I bought off clearance there that I still carry occasionally.
Great post, you’ve summed up why so many people are going to miss Loehman’s. Like I said, I never shopped there, but I know gals LOVED it.
I still miss Bradlees!
I’ve seen pics of those Paco Rabanne disc dresses and vests...they were definitely from the swinging ‘60s, LOL. Very interesting, though.
Me, too! My favorite is a tailored ecru matte silk with scroll embroidery on the front and cuffs, and self-covered buttons. It has the late-80s "big" styling, so I've been planning how to rework it to eliminate the very deep yoke across the back and too-square shoulders in favor of the more fitted styles of today. Another is a lustrous ivory short-sleeved shell to wear under a suit, in need of just a little shoulder slimming. Watch -- the minute I finish, styles will change radically!
Actually I have a whole box of discarded silk clothing in case I ever get the time to make a silk-topped quilt. Probably my offspring will get to throw them all out when I'm gone.
