My kid went to a school, Hampden-Sydney College in VA where students are allowed to have weapons...no shootings yet there...

And NC’s carry laws are still notso hotso.
Virginia has allowed open and concealed carry on university campuses for some time. You just can’t enter buildings on some campuses that decided to regulate it. There are others that don’t even prohibit that.
