Obama Praises Senate Over Move to Extend Jobless Benefits
New York Times ^ | January 7, 2014 | MICHAEL D. SHEAR

Posted on 01/07/2014 1:56:28 PM PST by lbryce

President Obama on Tuesday praised senators for advancing emergency legislation to extend unemployment insurance benefits and urged lawmakers to approve the measure and send it to him quickly.

Speaking at an event in the East Room of the White House just moments after the 60-37 vote in the Senate, Mr. Obama said that the legislation would restore benefits to millions of people who are struggling to find work in an economy that is still recovering from a deep recession.

“If this doesn’t get fixed, it will hurt about 14 million Americans over the course of this year,” Mr. Obama said. “Congress should pass this bipartisan plan right away and I will sign it right away.”

The president spoke in front of a group of unemployed people who had stopped receiving government support when the emergency insurance program expired just after Christmas. Mr. Obama rejected the argument made by some Republicans that extending the benefits would remove the incentive to keep looking for a job.

It’s probably a safe bet that nearly everyone who was receiving these benefits wants them to continue.

If I was an employer, why the h#$% would I want to hire ANY of these people? Not only are these people hurting the country by continuing their "funemployment", they are making themselves completely useless to potential employers.

What's even more of a laugh is finding out what these people think they are worth as a future employee. I know of one that has been laid off for half the year and continues to apply for management positions that this person is not qualified for.

What’s really going on here is that “Unemployment Benefits” are being turned into a long-term entitlement. This reminds me of a routine that the late comedian Sam Kinison used to do about world hunger -

“But I’m not trying to make fun of world hunger if in fact I think I have the answer. If you want to stop world hunger, stop sending them food. Don’t send these people another bit folks. You want to send them something, you want to help? Send them U-hauls. Send them U-hauls, some luggage, and send them a guy that goes Hey, we’ve been driving out here every day with your food for the last thirty or forty years, and we were driving out here, through the desert and it occurred to us that there wouldn’t be world hunger if you people lived where the food is! Get out of the desert! You live in a f***ing desert!”

I agree with you there; this isn’t like just a decade ago when there were plenty of jobs and plenty of opportunities. Until times get better we need to keep off the streets.

Brain damaged voters in this country, if they have jobs, have no idea what’s going on in this country unless it’s mentioned on reality TV or American Idol or whatever those stupid shows are called.

Obama gets away with this dogma while Republican politicians like Peter King brand Cruz something akin to a traitor.

TRUE.

‘compassionate conservatism’ -where have I heard that before?

If you subsidize something (unemployment), you get more of it.

“We have more debt, more unemployment, and less happiness in this country now because hope and change turn out to be discord and confusion.”

If I did the math correctly that is 8k for each unemployed person. That is about 2500$ a month.

You forgot the buearocratic beast's cut, which is likely half of the expenditure.

"After their “bi-partisan” budget deal that democrats agreed to and praised, that INCLUDED ENDING unemployment benefits, it did not take long for them to pull that football away from the hapless GOP Charlie Brown"

Could see this one coming from a mile away.

The Dems are only interested in pushing their political agenda at every opportunity, and Boehner is only interested in his futile efforts of trying to win approval of those who criticize Republicans for being "extremist" and "unwilling to compromise". No matter how many times he plays the fool, he habitually keeps running back for more...

I would concur for those that are looking for any available jobs and not only looking for jobs they prefer or intentionally stringing out the benefits as long as possible. I would concur that for those people, the important thing is that they get the help they need and if people don’t want public funds being used for that, then they need to pressure churches and charities to step up to the plate and get it done themselves. But there needs to be separation between those that are doing everything within their control to find work and support themselves and those who are actively choosing not to.

You are right that facilitating a lack of productivity is not Christian at all, but for those who are looking for any possible sort of work available for an extended period of time and still find that jobs are not available for them, then there should be ways to help them get back on their feet and if one has a problem with the fed and state gov’ts doing it - and it is perfectly reasonable that one would have a problem with it - then there also comes a point where the churches and charities need to actually step up their productivity so that public funds are not ever needed for these situations.
