ABOARD XUELONG, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese helicopter Xueying (Snow Eagle) on board the icebreaker Xuelong has been prepared for the airlift of trapped passengers on a Russian vessel stuck in sea ice off Antarctica, Xueying captain Jia Shuliang told Xinhua on Wednesday.

"The crew members have been readied to transport the 52 scientists and tourists aboard MV Akademik Shokalskiy with their luggage to Xuelong in groups of 12," Jia said.

According to the rescue plan, six crew members will be split into three two-person teams, respectively responsible for flying the helicopter and guaranteeing the ground service on board Xuelong and on the icy landing surface, Jia said.

"The first flight will transport all 12 staff of the emergency relief working group to the planned landing area to investigate thickness of the ice and pave planks to prevent possible sinking or rollovering," Jia told Xinhua.

Xuelong, which left Shanghai in early November on China's 30th scientific expedition to Antarctica, has established an emergency relief working group after the Russian ship's captain sent a formal request on Tuesday for chopper rescue.

The whole rescue, through five or six flights, should take three to four hours if weather conditions permit, Jia said, adding, "We must be patient and wait til the adverse weather improves, as poor visibility could lead to tragedy under the current condition of limited navigation and weather forecast."

He also pointed out that a landing on ice could be affected by many environmental factors, including the thickness of ice and snow in the landing area.

The powerful Australian icebreaker Aurora Australis, which is approaching slowly due to the poor weather, will use its barge to take aboard all the passengers from Xuelong afterwards.

Xueying helicopter, which started its service in the Chinese scientific expedition in the Antarctica on Nov. 6, 2013, is a large KA 32 helicopter aboard ship, and is capable of wind resistance under 10 meters per second.

Shouldn't the CO2 haters eschew the use of CO2 spewing helicopters?

This is such a funny tale. So, if the weather lets up, they will try to fly in some people to see if they can rescue the idiots.

If they can rescue the idiots, it will be just to the Chinese ice breaking ship. Then the Australian ice breaking ship will pick them up...

craziness.

Imagine the size of the carbon footprint this little adventure has made. Oh the horror, the absolute horror.

AGW phonies to be plucked from a Russian ship by a Red Chinese helicopter and transported to a Red Chinese icebreaker...perfect combination and symmetry of fascism and leftism.

"Passengers link arms and stamp out a helicopter landing site on the ice near the MV Akademik Shokalskiy (back R), still stuck in the ice off eastern Antarctica, as the ship waits for a possible helicopter rescue,"

Going unnoticed is the fact that these rescue missions at one time were always American ventures. There is no mention (at least none that I am aware) in this several days long saga of an American offer of help.

An example of our reach and influence in decline.

There is something a tad unsettling with the idea of climbing aboard a helicopter MADE IN CHINA.

Sad accurate observation. Meanwhile Obama is snorkeling in Hawaii.

"Australian authorities, who are coordinating the rescue, plan to use the helicopter on board the Chinese-flagged icebreaker Xue Long to bring 52 passengers off the boat, leaving behind its 22 crew members."

Large crew.

Wouldn’t it be better to release an infinite amount of Fluorocarbons around the area and wait on the ice to melt? Might get two birds with one stone. I encourage the researchers to consider this option first.

Air drop cans of freon, and have the AGW morons spray them around the ship. Or have every coal-fired power plant worldwide increase its output by 400%.

If I were the pilot, I’d make each and every one of them sign a statement disavowing Global Warming as communist bullshit subterfuge before I allowed them on my aircraft. I swear I would.

yep, there is a better way. Am glad you thought of the better way. We all need the electricity. Could we reinstall Freon in our vehicle air conditioning systems? Heck why waste good Freon?

There’s a reason for that. We only have one operational ice breaker.

Two much larger icebreakers one of ours and one of Russia’s crossed the equator yesterday. Icebreakers are not the fastest ships out there and we do not keep one in the antarctic all of the time.
