Severe Antarctic weather was slowing an Australian icebreaker's bid to reach a Russian ship trapped in ice since Christmas eve with 74 people onboard, the Australian maritime rescue agency said on Monday.
The Aurora Australis was currently about 11 nautical miles from the stranded Russian ship Akademik Shokalskiy, said the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), which is co-ordinating the rescue.
"The area is currently experiencing snow showers, resulting in poor visibility. The Aurora Australis is travelling slowly due to the conditions to ensure the safety of all on board," AMSA said in a statement.
AMSA had earlier expected the Aurora Australis to arrive at the scene Sunday evening.

I love irony.
“while another French-flagged ship was no longer involved in the rescue.”
Sounds like the French-flagged ship gave up already.
They are better off at the gay bars in the Tropics.
So they wont wait for global warming to save them?
And it’s summer down there too. Lol
bear in mind that it is MID SUMMER in Antarctica...
Global warming indeed...
:)
Or had fuel vs distance issues. Really if the ship can't cut through the ice and doesn't have a Helo on-board, then it is another potential liability in an already bad situation. The Russian flagged ships Captain may have released the French ship from the rescue or Australian officals may have.
This simply cannot be....
Hasn’t the TV told me for a decade that the ice shelfs are melting, and they aren’t ever coming back??
The TV isn’t lying to me, is it?
The TV isnt lying to me, is it?
Yep. Take it to your friendly local range and just shoot the son of an obama. A .177 caliber air rifle will do in a pinch, but a twelve-bore will both look and sound better and provide a more "liberating experience," you could call it. Just shoot it. Stuff whatever's left of it in the trash. Read books. Laugh more. Live longer and happier.
Yeah. I wonder what their daily routine is like aboard ship? That the ship is heaved up about 10 degrees on her longitutinal axis and another 10 degrees on her lateral axis has to have a psychological effect on the passengers.
".....like rain on your wedding day...."
No just evil fossil fuel burning icebreakers and helicopters.
More reports are now coming out about the bad weather.

Global Warming Expedition to Prove Antarctic Ice is Melting Trapped by Ice
Boatload of global warming alarmists trapped by sea ice in summer. Film at eleven.
Lest anyone forget, it's actually summer in the Antarctic. The greenies went there to try and bolster their failed climate theory during the calmest, most optimal time of year -- and still got trapped in the ice.
The irony's too thick to cut with an icebreaker.
I am currently here and we are standing by should we be called to fly to them for anything though I expect no call will come. I just find it beyond satisfying to see that the ship, full of religious man-made-global-warming types is stuck in “uncharacteristically high amounts of summer ice” some 800 miles from us at McMurdo. I am loving it!
Keep us updated as you can, Flyer. Thanks for the on-the-ground report!
And the ice breaker is having to ram through 6 foot thick ice to make headway. Which makes me wonder how thick the behindway will be if they turn around.
