So close, yet so far: Rescue boat waits for better weather 28 miles out.

(CNN) -- After nearly a week trapped by deep Antarctic ice, the 74 passengers aboard an expedition vessel could soon be freed.

An Australian icebreaker ship Aurora Australis is 28 nautical miles away from the Russian-flagged Akademik Shokalskiy and is waiting for snow showers to pass, according to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

The Aurora Australis needs better visibility before trying to break through the ice and reach the stranded vessel.

This attempt follows the Chinese icebreaker Xue Long, or Snow Dragon, which was just six nautical miles away from the trapped vessel when it couldn't get any closer due to unusually thick ice.

Conflicting accounts of the Aurora Australis' distance from the Akademik Shokalskiy. This article says 28 nm but others have it at 16 nm. Whatever the distance, I suspect it to represent the edge of the pack ice.

Did they bring any snowmobiles with them?

Why do none of the news stories report that the ship stuck in the ice had scientists and paying passengers on a mission to prove that global warming is affecting Antarctica?

Also, nobody seems to be pointing out that it’s summertime down there!

Fixed it.

You ask a rhetorical question. My wife is much better at answering such questions than I am. I'll just say more than half of the reporters don't know it's summertime in Antarctica and nearly all are members of the cult of global warming and as such fear being ostracized.

I’ve never been there (Thank the Lord), but when they were stuck just three miles from clear water and then it froze to thirteen miles away, couldn’t they just walk out? I’ m being profoundly ignorant of the situation, but would they have fallen through thirty feet of ice?

The trapped boaters could raise money for some charity by taking donations and bets for their inaugural Antarctica Run to Daylight Marathon Plus 2. Vegas could take bets on how many of the crew and passengers could run the 28 miles to the rescue boat within a 24-hour period. It would be awesome to broadscast from a drone.

So these passengers actually paid money to get stuck in the ice? They could have just waited for a snowstorm in Chicago and headed for the Kennedy Expressway; or the Dan Ryan, or the Eisenhower (the only Republican expressway in Chicago)

The “frozen water” don’t look too thick from this viewpoint. Now, the “melted ice” looks mighty blue.

Are you serious? That should be the headline. One more reason CNN sucks...

The ice isn’t one solid sheet — the gaps would prevent simply walking out. OTOH, they should be able to make it out by pushing a small boat over the ice, and jumping in and paddling over the gaps.

Ice canoe races are one of the biggest events at the annual Quebec Winter Carnival.

They need better visibility. For what?? Between flares and stars and GPS...they can hit their target.

I understand that ocean ice has air holes in it, some quite deep, and some without an ice floor, but straight into the ocean.
