Reports from on board a Russian-flagged ship that has been stranded in Antarctica since Christmas Eve have suggested the ice is cracking around them.
The Akademik Shokalskiy had been retracing Sir Douglas Mawson's Antarctic expedition and conducting scientific research when sea ice closed in about 1,500 nautical miles south of Hobart.
The ship has 74 people on board, including scientists, crew members and paying passengers.
A Chinese icebreaker attempted to reach the icebound ship on Friday but failed.

My wife said she'd love to be aboard the Akademik Shokalskiy listening to the shaman explain how everything they are experiencing is due to global warming.

Its from all that heat being generated from the humans aboard that ship. Only explanation possible per Al Gore.

The cracks forming around the ship are called the prism effect. The force of the ice on an object the shop becomes multiplied by slippage planes radiating put from the object effectively making the ice performike a very large pin vice.
Ship crushing force that Shackleton saw.

In the Antarctic, *anything* different is cause for concern. Big cracks in the ice may indicate contraction, or expansion, and either one might be very bad news to a ship.

Yeah, with all that melting ice (uh, water) and freezing water (uh, ice) it must be quite the harrowing experience.

Chinese helicopter flying over their location.... I wonder if anybody was noticing the "Big Cracks" filmed by the chopper... and noticed that the chopper seemed to "follow" the cracks wherever it went... or the cracks followed wherever the chopper went...
