We know where he was when he heard. In the White House, at a previously scheduled meeting with Panetta (then SecDef), about 5 PM EST.

So, when Obama went to bed that night, sometime after a 10 PM phone conversation with Hillary, he full well knew that the embassy was still under attack and that Stevens was dead (and was, so far, the only casualty).

At 10:30 PM, Hillary publicly blamed the affair on "inflammatory material posted on the internet".
