Mary Mary's Erica Campbell Too 'Sexy' for Gospel? Some Christians Think So

Erica Campbell's new album promo shot is getting lots of attention. Perhaps not the kind she anticipated.

The Mary Mary singer recently posted a photo of herself wearing a figure-hugging white dress on her Instagram page. The photo sparked lots of conversations about whether or not the dress was too sexy for a gospel singer.

"Yes, you are a beautiful, curvy woman…but No ma'am you are singing the gospel of Jesus Christ," wrote pastor Stacey Woods on American Preacher.

We compel men to come through our love for Jesus, but when we wear things that are distracting, the message is somehow lost and it becomes about us and not about Him," wrote Woods in a follow-up.

When I go fishing I use a bait that works, not one that is acceptable to some of the fish. Mary is using the tools that God gave her to bring people to the Church.

There is something called “modesty” that is also Biblical.

Hmmmm....I sort of agree that she’d look better without the dress... ;-)

Yeah, I think the “problem” is not so much the dress as what it’s covering up.

All her fiddly bits are covered. Can't even really see her ankles.

Tight dress, yes, but technically “modest.” Turtle neck, long sleeves, skirt below the knees, and even the ankles are covered. No earrings—or very small. Hard to tell with all that crowning glory (long hair). Calves (enhanced by the high heels), hands, and face are the only features left to exposure.

But even in a looser fitting dress with a longer skirt, her curves would be difficult to hide!

“Some Christians” are damned fools.

Body measurements as a determinant of morality? They penalize the performer for the lasciviousness of their own minds.

I’m not crazy about the dress, but I can’t really say it’s immodest in any way. It’s a little tight, OK, but other than that it’s not revealing.

She could turn about 30 deg more sideways too.

It’s one size too small and intended to be alluring even while it covers her up. Personally I think the right size would be even sexier because it wouldn’t scream “Look at me!”

When the clothes are so tight you can see the outline of the undergarments, they are immodest.

Just a good rule of thumb.
