President Barack Obama on Thursday commuted the sentences of eight people he said were serving unduly harsh sentences for drug crimes in the most expansive use yet of his presidential power to free inmates.

Obama made the commutations because the prisoners were sentenced under a system that treated convictions for crack cocaine offenses harsher than powder cocaine. Obama also pardoned 13 others for various crimes.

Oh good.

"Commuting the sentences of these eight Americans is an important step toward restoring fundamental ideals of justice and fairness," Obama said.

Wonder if one of them will be bold enough to sell some *good stuff* to one of his daughters.

Out on my limb now .....

I doubt that his habits have much of any kind of effect on the children. If I read body language correctly, they *loathe* him.

It seems pointless to have laws....these criminals will be back in society, to do the only thing they know.

I have whiplash with all the news lately that is reporting on our slide into the crevasse of destruction. ;(

No, one of them was Mass Gov Deval Patrick's brothers, so 7 other crack dealers got commuted sentences to cover for his release.

Look on the bright side. This has great potential to turn into a Willie Horton moment. (I’m surprised they didn’t think about that.) Michael Dukakis was the leading contender for the presidency. But he allowed men serving life sentences for murder to have unsupervised weekend furloughs from prison. Seriously. They’d leave prison Friday and return Sunday night. You can’t make this up. Willie Horton was arrested during a furlough for murdering somebody. He’d been doing that every furlough. It ended Michael Dukakis as a politician. He should have gone to prison himself.

Generally, drug users who leave prison go right back to what they were doing that got them there in the first place.

As long as they remain *non-violent* ...it’ll be A-OK.

Otherwise every metro will look like Oakland, CA.

And that's the plan. We've moved from a nation of laws to a nation of exceptions to the laws.

Like a caller on “Red Eye Radio” said this morning: “If you like your drug dealer, you can keep your drug dealer.”

This isn’t amusing.

Anyone saying how great this was had best understand that many of these felons received these sentences under plea bargains.
One of them was right here - he was convicted of possessing over 50 grams of crack & over 50 grams of base. Actually the amount was over 10 ounces and was received in partial payment for drive by shootings in fort pierce florida.
Great job!

Don’t keep a brotha down! Here in Connecticut, we recently released 3K convicted felons to save $$$.

As you say, many had pleased down their time....many with illegal weapon possessions....and where are they now? Back on the streets....making up for lost time.

**Obama said those whose sentences he commuted have served at least 15 years in prison, many under mandatory minimums that required judges to impose the long sentences even if they didn’t think it fit the crime.”

Do we ever pass any laws that don’t need to be *re-written*. It seems as if the congresscritters can’t get anything right. I don’t recall this happening so frequently in the past.

Generally speaking, I think the punishment for the use of crack cocaine when compared to powder cocaine was much too harsh.
