(CNN) Sen. Patty Murray, co-crafter of the bipartisan budget agreement and member of the veterans affair committee, said Wednesday cuts to pension benefits for some military veterans under the spending plan was a part of a compromise to avoid billions in cuts to the defense industry.
"We had to look at how we could find compromises. There are things in this I like and there are things in this I don't like," the Senate Budget Committee chair and Democrat from Washington State said in an interview on CNN's "New Day."
"But at the end of the day, if we couldn't find a compromise on how we move forward, then we would be facing a 20 billion dollar hit to our defense industry - meaning layoffs, uncertainty and a lot of furloughs, harming a lot of families across the country," Murray told CNN anchor Kate Bouldan.
Murray comes from a military family. Her father, who was awarded a Purple Heart in World War II, suffered from multiple sclerosis and was disabled.
She added that she's open to changes to the compromise before the military action takes affect in two years if an agreement can be reached on the issue in a divided Congress.
"If somebody's got a better way and has an opportunity to do that, this, military action doesn't take effect for two years so we welcome anybody coming with a better way to do it that want to offer it and get it through a divided congress," she said.
"I'm happy to look at that and support it if it's something i can agree with."

ObamaPhones (tm) are paid for by a tax on all telephone users. If your phone company offers the courtesy of listing it, it would be included in the Universal Service fee or tax. This is its own outrage because it is under the control of the FCC. They can fund the program to any level they please by voting to set the tax rate without a vote of the Congress or customers.
Watch—they will come back to military pensions again and again while totally ignoring the soaring cost of all other entitlements. Whether those go to citizens or not.
Believe it or not, there is also a similar program for high speed internet you might not have heard about. Families who kids are on free lunches at school are eligible to get high speed internet for $10 a month, subsidized by other subscribers.
Point taken - but again, I don't think they expect to get much of that demographic in the first place, so they wouldn't see it as much of a loss.
“We had to look at how we could find compromises.”
Now, that’s the way to come up with a budget. I had to develop financial projections and budgets. I never used the old Compromise method she talks about. She needs to explain it. Here, I’ll help her out. They believe that the Defense Budget is like a crosstown high school football game. The Democrat team needed something to cheer about, so the Democrats threw the retired Veterans to them. There was no financial analysis. There was no prioritizing based on the needs of the nation. There was just good old Democrat discrimination to appease their base. They behaved like ten year olds. Makes you proud, don’t it. Hail Democratland. Get rid of The Stars And Stripes. It doesn’t mean anything any more. Hail Democratland!
end ObamaPhones for one thing
It’s so sad that we have money to have NASA institute programs to make muslims feel good, build muslim mosques, arm our enemies, throw galas at the White House and pay for outrageous presidential vacations and continuous campaigning by a lame***duck resident, but we can’t take care of our servicemen and veterans. I always expect this from demonrats, but I am disgusted by how many supposed Republicans voted to do do this. Every damn one of these miscreants should be voted out of office ASAP!
That photo with Jeff should be a meme.
I am one of the retired military impacted by this bill.
I called my congressman’s office asking for a face to face meeting with him. Nope. No time on Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA)’s calendar for several months. No time at all.
Congressman Hunter voted for this bill.
But the Obama phones are paid for by you and I through our phones bills.
Read the small print on your statement.
And, porculous Patty is supposed to be a big advocate for veterans. She is always bragging about what she does for vets in her newsletter.

That is the biggest load of sh*t of the year.
Back stabber ryan said that it was about time that these military personel take a cut since the federal workers have taken cut after cut.
Well I guess that there is nothing in the government that could be cut other that this back stabbing shameless cut.
And then he smiles and pats himself on the back.
ARE TAXABLE INCOME! (Well, at least for some flavors)
“I truly believed it was planned so the Democrats could put it back before the 2014 elections. They and the GOPe believe people are that stupid.”
Well, GOP Senator Ron Johnson said tonight that it will be fixed before the end of the year.
What? Isn’t that out of character for him?
