Well those people didn’t do what was needed to get those officious officials out of their posts. Instead, those people worshiped those officials. The good Lord gave them what they asked for, in hope that they would see the folly and renounce it later.
They can’t discern their own folly and will never renounce their sin until the Creator tells them to in His presence.
