For the thousands of mourners inside Johannesburg's FNB Stadium it was meant to be a fitting tribute to a 'giant of history'.
But while some reflected on the remarkable life of Nelson Mandela, some world leaders saw it as the perfect opportunity to grab a quick 'selfie' with their peers.
Perhaps not in keeping with the tone of a memorial service, US President Barack Obama, Prime Minister David Cameron and Danish leader Helle Thorning-Schmidt grinned as they cosied up for a quick picture at today's memorial service for the former South African president, prompting an outpouring of criticism.
As the trio posed for the mobile phone snap, Obama's wife Michelle sat alongside her husband looking less than impressed.
Obama had earlier paid an emotional tribute to Nelson Mandela, calling the South African leader a 'giant of history' as he spoke in a stadium where around a third of the seats were mysteriously left empty.
Mr Obama arrived almost an hour after the ceremony started, but was greeted with prolonged applause by the crowd - in stark contrast to South African president Jacob Zuma, who was loudly booed whenever he appeared on the stadium's big screen.

member that Clinton clip where he was guffawing ? Caught imself being taped and clamped up most ricky tick.
Classy, real classy.
I’ll take “how does a POS outdo itself as a POS?” for $200 Alex
Remember when he waves and obscure the face of another leader. It’s all about him.
World leaders are nothing if not Uuber Narcissists... why must they always be thrusting their faces out there for all to see... can’t they just leave us the hell lone?
It warms my heart to see these three shallow rat craps getting the hell beat out of them in the worldwide press.
like ha huh cause it is all about MEEEEE (and you) he can ESAD
Yeah, if it’s their trip then why should I care? Because their trip is supposed to be a model trip? A model for who?
The pics of Michelle while she is observing her husband and Danish prime minister are somewhat disturbing. What is it with her attitude when she is around other prominate women? Could she be that shallow and jealous?
They gave Hilaria Baldwin a hard time for supposedly texting during Gandolfini funeral, (not true) but Obama is making a selfie and it’s ok.
Why yes. Yes she can and is. She is just hateful of anybody and everybody that doesn't match her world view. Remember, the WH controls the pictures that THEY release about Zero and the Squatch. The MSM is not allowed. Every pic the WH releases is designed to portray der Führer and Bigfoot in a positive and glorifying light. Its when pics outside of WH press releases that one sees the true Wookies countenance and personality.
You tell me.
I hate to give her any credit but I think she is the only adult present, watching that idiot that masquerades as her husband being the complete fool that he is.
Hmmm, the whole Clinton family, all four of them, went to the funeral.
The important news is secondary to the “selfies” I guess. Zuma is under pressure to accelerate the redistribution ala Mugabe. Julius Malema with his adoption of the older apartheid song, “Kill the Boer”, is out of favor with the ANC but can he challenge Zuma. Is the crowd reaction today a beginning of radical race policies as populist enticement. How long can the fragile balance of Mandela and De Klerk last?
In the many photos, the one with “who’s who.. of world dignitaries’ as the tag line.... there is... waaaay over to the left sitting in front of his Saudi masters in head gear....Jimmah Cahtah. And, they didn’t even do a closeup or an ID in the photo. Jimmah they don’t want to hardly know yah. LOL! But billy boy and hills and chelsea puppy— of course and GWB and wife.
Wondering why my post was deleted; you caught that too huh?
