Unarmed student shot dead by cop after asking, ‘Oh, you’re going to shoot me?’

A 23-year-old Texas university student was shot dead by a police officer during an altercation in which the unarmed and usually mild-mannered student allegedly assault the officer and asked, “Oh, you’re going to shoot me?”

The officer did in fact shoot him six times, killing him.

Robert Cameron Redus is an honors student at the University of the Incarnate Word, a private Catholic institution in San Antonio, Texas. Redus’s friends describe him as “not aggressive,” “gentle,” and “well-liked,” according to local news.

UIW police officer Chris Carter pulled over Redus at 2:00 a.m. on Friday night for unknown reasons. The argument between the two quickly became heated, and Redus attacked, according to an Alamo Heights Police Department press conference. Redus successfully wrestled Carter’s police baton out of his hands, and started beating him over the head with it.

Carter reacquired the baton, and told Redus that he would open fire if the student refused to surrender. According to Police Chief Richard Pruitt, Redus charged the officer once again, forcing Carter to shoot him.

A neighbor who overheard the exchange said that Redus asked the officer if he was going to shoot.

“’I heard [a man] say, “Oh, you’re gonna shoot me?” like sarcastic almost,’” said the neighbor.

Carter fired six times.

Devastated friends described Redus’s alleged behavior that night as strange, given the student’s usual demeanor.

“He’s not an aggressive person at all,” said Sarah Davis, in a statement to local news. “The story just doesn’t really make sense to any of us.”

The officer in question has been placed on leave pending an investigation. The university said that Carter has an “extensive law enforcement background.” But according to the San Antonio News, Carter has held eight different jobs in his eight years as an officer.

The police department did not respond to a request for comment.

“This officer has a long history of problems according to other articles.”

Eight jobs in eight years. What employer would touch this piece of crap with a job hopping record like that.

The kid was obviously capable of taking the cop down and the cop was given a chance to walk away, but no-oooo-oooo ...

Is that how it works now? If you can give a cop a beat down the cop has the duty to retreat?

Bwaaaahahahahaaaaaaa! You should go on Leno with that.

It’s amazing how so believe the cops story, when it’s been shown time and again they lie instinctively in these type of situations.

I am watching this one, but to date, there isn't enough factual information available yet,IMHO to make a judgement.

I hope the investigation is conducted openly, swiftly, and intital findings made public quickly.

Sadly, I find it is no longer wise to presume honesty from any level of police forces, or any actions they undertake.
I hate that, but it is the truth nowadays.
I am old enough to remember a time when it was otherwise....

I hate cops

I don't. In fact, it is my experience that at the very least, most of them are good men.

No, not in this case. This guy’s dash cam had supposedly become unglued and wasn’t operating to record the incident. Not sure if that is just an excuse or if it can be documented that this happened before the incident.

works?

beat down?

None of us can do anything but read INTO this story ... 'cause we got nuthin' else.

A cop makes a stop and loses his baton (and apparently is not hurt by it), reecovers the baton and (again .. reading into this thing) the kid walks away, or tries to .. the cop pulls his gun out and the kid sarcastically asked, "Oh ... so you're gonn'a shoot me now?"

Sarcasm is now an assault?

Look, I have great respect for LEO's, but this is a colledge town and we don't know which direction the kid is walking ... is he trying to get back to his dorm.

So if the cop took the kid down and gets him to the station ... what's the charge(s)?

Drunkin disorderly, resisiting arrest, assaulting a police officer and probably a couple of more.

ANYone that's ever been popped for a bullshit stop would analize this and think; "I should'a kicked his ass when he .... "

Of course we didn't and so now we have a bullshit charge.

The kid fought a bullshit charge and a bullshit cop emptied his gun into him

murderer

Some of us realize that because we don't have many facts at the moment, that we shouldn't draw conclusions. That's what our justice system if for. If we have " nuthin' else", we might be well advised to withhold judgment.

Did I read something into this statement that wasn't there? ...

I don't see the caveats in there. I guess I should have grabbed my Madam Cleo crystal ball and seen your revisions before you posted them. LOL

If a rogue officer, maybe he and Redus deserved one another.

Problem is, Redus is dead and the cop has a very sketchy background.

Something stinks to high Heaven here.
