A new Common Core writing assignment asks students to think like a Nazi and explain why Jews are evil. This story first broke back in April:

Think like a Nazi, the assignment required students. Argue why Jews are evil.Students in some Albany High School English classes were asked this week as part of a persuasive writing assignment to make an abhorrent argument:
“You must argue that Jews are evil, and use solid rationale from government propaganda to convince me of your loyalty to the Third Reich!”
Students were asked to watch and read Nazi propaganda, then pretend their teacher was a Nazi government official who needed to be convinced of their loyalty. In five paragraphs, they were required to prove that Jews were the source of Germany’s problems.
The exercise was intended to challenge students to formulate a persuasive argument and was given to three classes, Albany Superintendent Marguerite Vanden Wyngaard said. She said the assignment should have been worded differently.
“I would apologize to our families,” she said. “I don’t believe there was malice or intent to cause any insensitivities to our families of Jewish faith.”
One-third of the students refused to complete the assignment, she said.
Vanden Wyngaard said the exercise reflects the type of writing expected of students under the new Common Core curriculum, the tough new academic standards that require more sophisticated writing. Such assignments attempt to connect English with history and social studies.

Read up on racist propaganda and old stuff from the early 20th century.

How about this one:
You're a member of NAMBLA. Explain why adult men should be allowed to have intercourse with young boys and their parents should have no right to interfere with your love.
No? Not appropriate?
Okay. Try this one:
You're a late term abortion provider. Explain how the baby moving it's limbs while you sever it's spinal column is just a reflex and not at all indicative of any pain.
We just want to connect English with history and social studies. What's wrong with that?

I actually don’t have a problem with this for the higher level stuidents. Those who are certain to grasp that the point is to understand how propaganda can be used to sell even the worst ideas. It could help prepare the student to recognize this sort of propaganda in the future, and he is pretty certain to run into this sort of thing sooner or later.
After all, the book “How To Lie With Statistics” isn’t really meant to encourage lying withn statistics. And I think it should be required reading in High School.

But by ALL means do not not NOT criticize King Obama for his crappy policies, personality, or anything at all for that matter. That would not be critical thinking, just “racist.”

Next time they can have an assignment explaining why slavery was good and delineating the benefits for the slave as well as slave owner.

Is every dumb thing a teacher, administrator, school, or book publisher going to be blamed on common core from now on?
You know, I paid no attention to this stuff, until I realized that my totally non-political sis-in-law (who has 2 kids in elementary school) was outraged about it, as were many of the other parents.
Now that I’ve paid only a modicum of attention, it is all very disturbing.
And yeah T. is a white suburban woman. Too bad her insubordinate employee Arne Duncan has no respect for her or the other parents PAYING HIS SALARY.

I don't like common core, but people need to get their facts and arguments straight. Being inaccurate on all these posts is going to help common core supporters make opponents look ignorant, or like fear mongers.
There was malice alright, but I do believe they were hopelessly ignorant of their own malice. That's what they're always trying to tell "white racists", right? "We can see you for what you are."
