URGENT: Gun Control Coming to the Senate Floor on Monday

“[Democrats] just spent all year trying to effectively destroy the gun lobby, so why in heaven's name [should] we give them this Christmas present?" -- GOA’s Michael Hammond on the plastic gun ban (ABC News, Dec. 3, 2013)

The U.S. House of Representatives did a very dangerous thing Tuesday -- and, apparently, it did so with the consent of one gun organization.

By voice vote, the House slammed through a ten-year re-authorization of the poorly drafted 1988 plastic gun ban.

Lest anyone be confused about how the anti-gun Left views this, USA Today crowed, on the front page of Wednesday's newspaper that the “HOUSE SAYS YES TO ONE GUN BILL -- Plastic gun ban only firearm legislation to pass since November.”

Taken alone, this gives the Obama administration, if it chooses, another three years to use the 1988 law to ban large numbers of guns.

But there is an even bigger danger: Chuck Schumer held a press conference the same day to indicate that he will use the House-passed bill as a vehicle to pass even more gun control. We don't expect to know Schumer's bill number or language before he actually offers it, but it will purport to deal with guns from 3-D printers, while actually being much broader.

So here's what we are doing: We are asking our friends in the Senate to put a “hold” on any effort by Schumer to amend the House bill.

The Senate will only be in session four or five days next week before the House goes out for the year, and Schumer may not be able to get time on the Senate floor without “unanimous consent” from all senators.

So, by doing this, we would force Schumer to give up on his vehicle for banning printer-guns if he wanted any reauthorization of the 1988 bill. If Schumer remains adamant, there will be no re-authorization at all. Even if he capitulates, we'll see what happens.

It's not a perfect outcome. But we think it's an outcome we can probably achieve.

ACTION: Click here to Contact your Senators. Ask them to oppose any effort by Senator Chuck Schumer to add gun control to the H.R. 3626, the plastic gun ban reauthorization which passed in the House.

Maybe I’m late to the party here, but I no longer believe we can restore the republic by WINNING elections either.
If the squish GOP majority keeps insisting on “electability” over character, and trying to drive real conservatives out of the party... What’s the point? The low information voters, the urine stream media (and you, apparently) don’t want to give constitutional liberty a chance right now. We may very well have to “fight with the army we have”. I certainly hope it doesn’t come to that, but when will we be stronger?

American government is designed to be resilient. We didn’t get here overnight. We’re at a major inflection point and if we can play it correctly, we can hold majorities in both Houses for a generation and turn back the clock. Controlling Congress is the most important thing. It means real control of government.

The difference between a RINO and a Democrat is enormous. We need to stop pretending that everything is catastrophic. We’re winning on many, many fronts. It will take a lot of compromise, thoughtfulness and a long vision. Ted Cruz said if they give you half a loaf, take it and go back for the other half. We’re moving our agenda forward against the almost inconceivable might of the MSM, US/state/local government apparatus which includes the K-college school system, and every crony capitalist and welfare beneficiary in America, plus many countries that want that dough and want to see America fail.

I think it is an amazing paen to our Founders that we’re holding our own and making serious inroads. The meme is ours, we need to control the battlespace and shape it to our benefit. That’s being handed to us on a golden platter by the Democrats. Don’t sweat the small stuff, we need to win the big fights and that’s going to take time.

Keep in mind that Boehner sent a poison pill to the Democrat-controlled Senate. Look:

https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/113/hr3626#overview

On a voice vote the Dems passed this bill. They’re running scared, totally scared.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/12/10/us-usa-congress-guns-idUSBRE9B900Q20131210

Now the new enemy will be the gun companies themselves wanting a crony capitalist intervention to stop people from printing their own guns. Watch for the NRA to give cover to those restrictions or a permit/licensing system.

That will be the real fight.

This is what they did with the healthcare bill. The house passed one thing, the senate stripped it and replaced it with something else and then passed that.

And how is that even legal? We are supposed to have a system of checks and balances in this country. The leftist Democrat Party has managed to circumvent (ignore) our constitution for the past five years. I'd say that equates to treason and grounds for impeachment for them all....since each and every one of them vowed to "uphold the US Constitution"....not to crap on it or ignore it.

Okay. The Senate passed the bill & the poser robo-signed it... When does our big victory party begin?

It’s a little victory party that keeps the news cycle on Democrat failure. The bill harms no gun owner. Why the pouting over nothing?

Think of the headlines and soccer mom reactions. We need to win and win big thereby controlling Congress for the next generation (or two). That’s the goal.

I guess I’ve failed to detect the “pouting over nothing”. Maybe I’m guilty of it...

Our government has now declared one more thing you cannot do. One more liberty you may not exercise under threat of force. I don’t want an undetectable firearm.
What I do want is the liberty that God created me with, that the Founders fought for, that many good men have died to preserve... A piece of this liberty has been carved away today by fools not worthy to shine those men’s shoes, and you call it a victory?
Because it keeps the media focused on Obuffooncare. Hah!
So that more of these weak, phony, bought-and-paid-for PRETEND conservatives can MAYBE get elected?

Compromise with evil is evil.

I understand your frustration and feel the same way. I’ve found, though, that the going is tough, but we can win. It takes focus and time, but also the admission that the entire country doesn’t agree with us. We’re right, so what do we do?

Listen to this and tell me what you think:

http://www.econtalk.org/archives/2013/07/morris_fiorina.html

I think we need to be wise, compromise in our direction, and go back to the well over and over again. If we can take Congress and hold it for a generation (just like the Democrats did), then we can turn it around.

I appreciate the link. The man has some very interesting insights into the psyche of the electorate. Problem is; I’m an absolutist. For instance, I don’t believe that “term limits” are in the best interest of the Republic. I think Constitutional limits on governmental power are more effective.
What would be the point in buying a Senator if he did not have the power to help further your interests through legislation?
Or to steal words from Heinlein: When is it moral for a group of people to do something that would not be moral for an individual member of that group to do? I wouldn’t kill an unborn child, so why would I ever support a politician, no matter how many other issues we might agree on, who is willing to go along with the idea to get more votes?

If I won’t allow my neighbor, who Jesus commands me to love, to decide for me what I can or cannot own; what I can or cannot say; what God I should worship, or what liberties I may enjoy, then why on earth should I accept & support those dictates from people who make their living at my expense?

I respect your point of view FRiend, but I can’t wrap my head around the concept of yielding the few liberties we now enjoy for the promises of public servants who do not serve the public, that later they will do the right thing.

I suspect that I’m too far gone for that.

VA will be leading the way on gun control. People there just voted for it again last month.
