Gun control efforts must settle for small gains

For gun control advocates, the smallest of accomplishments in 2013 may have to be enough. A 10-year extension of the ban on plastic guns — not toys but high-powered firearms that can evade detection by metal detectors — is poised to clear Congress before the existing 25-year law expires on Dec. 9.

“high-powered firearms that can evade detection by metal detectors”

Argh! Not this myth again.

And the response by us should be to push unceasingly for ever-expanded gun rights. Not rest until "shall issue" CCW is the law in every state and city.

One of our next crusades should be to ban "law enforcement" from being allowed to possess any weapon which is not equally available to any CCW.

Personally, I don’t want CCW permits to be required again in my state (Arizona). Any CCW permit is a government-issued permission to exercise a constitutionally-guaranteed right.

3D plastic is fun and interesting but 3D metal printing is the real idea whose time has come.

What "issue"? Why would the government be in the business of issuing permission slips for civil rights? Are you going to need to get permission to take the fifth now? How about the first?

OK, then change it to "Not rest until 'constitutional carry' CCW (and open carry) is the law in every state and city". Happier?

Realistically, once you have "shall issue" CCW, you might as well have Constitutional Carry, with your driver's license being your permit.

Under "shall issue", you are eligible to get a license if you have no criminal record, nor any involuntary institutionalization in the police database. If the police want to verify your eligibility to be carrying, they're going to do a database check regardless of the plastic card you show them.
