Honduras' electoral commission has officially declared the conservative governing party candidate winner of Sunday's presidential poll.

"Today's figures indicate clearly that the winner of the election is Juan Orlando Hernandez," said the commission's president David Matamoros.

Mr Hernandez has won 35.88% of the vote, according to AFP news agency.

His main rival, the left-wing candidate Xiomara Castro, has won 29% with 81.5% of polling stations tallied.

Mr Matamoros earlier said the final result would be known in the next few days, but he called on all candidates to support the new government.

Second-placed Ms Castro said she was robbed of victory.

She said she would present evidence of fraud.

Haven't seen anything about this. Seemed like it was going to be a lot closer but the communists got rebuffed. Hopefully he doesn't let the "activists" get their way and he makes headway into eliminating criminal organizations and make Honduras a better place to live.

Expect to see an under-cover video from Jaime Keffo any day now.

Good news.

The aptly named (Castro) left wing loser is crying foul.

We have been there. Nice people, good cigars, lovely beaches, and fine food.

She is the wife of the ousted President Mel Zelaya.

Their constitution states only 1 term for president. And it states if the president tries to change the law they will be removed.

They picked up Zelaya in the night in his PJs and flew him to the border of Costa Rica and dropped him over the border. hee hee hee

Obozo did all he could to force the Hondurans to take him back, but they held out.

Mr. Michaeletti replaced him to serve the rest of his term. He is a great man.

Roberto Micheletti, former President of Honduras

They murdered his nephew while he was in office. Very sad.

Commie/druggies are evil people. Murder rate in Honduras is very high.

I might go for a visit some day, now that they have made the approach into Toncontin Airport a bit safer, just so I can text message pictures of me eating at the Burger King next to the airport to some Hondurans I know.

According to this, the population of Honduras is like 85% mestizo and only 8% white, and the mestizo percentage would be higher were it not for blacks on the Caribbean coast and pure-blood Indians inland: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Honduras

If having Native American ancestry automatically made people leftists, between 75%-99% of voters from Mexico to Paraguay would be leftist; and if being of European descent insulated people from leftism, Argentina would have an overwhelming conservative majority. Obviously, things aren’t quite that simple.

Hi Lurker, I hope you are well. Yes Honduras is a beautiful country. I spent 18 days there in 2007 doing what some would call mission/humanitarian work. I stayed in Tegucigalpa in a walled compound at night. We could hear gunfire every night. But the next morning was always without evidence of any disturbance. This was during Zelaya’s term of office. I actually conversed with him and his “Attorney General” in the evenings.

During the day, I would be among the people in the country. There was quite a difference in thinking. I found good, faithful, industrious, hard working, prideful, and generous people. They appreciated any help that could be brought. At the time I was there, the life expectancy was 41 years.

One sight I will never forget though was the teenaged armed guard (shotgun) on the outside of a “caged” hardware store. Hurricane Mitch did them no favors by “parking” over the country for 75 inches of rain. It destroyed the infrastructure of the COUNTRY.

But despite the travesty, the people remained strong.
