Brooklyn tenants bust into apartments after landlord locks them out
NY Daily News ^ | november 27, 2013 | Kerry Burke AND Greg B. Smith

A group of Brooklyn tenants busted back into their rent-stabilized apartments Tuesday after their landlord had locked them out and marketed their units for more money.

After a series of fires forced out tenants of the six-unit building in Brownsville, landlord Yuen Ip changed the locks and ignored the city’s warnings to let them back in, said Brooklyn Legal Services attorney Adam Meyers.

The four, accompanied by Meyers, showed up with a locksmith and reentered three apartments. Another apartment had already been rented.

A fire would be very unfortunate but would get the owner out of this mess, if one of the tenants he is forced to support was to be careless.

The building could be hit by lightning...

I don’t imagine property taxes are, “stabilized”.
Why would anyone be a landlord in NYC?

“Why would anyone be a landlord in NYC?”

Well, obviously they are still profitable even with the rent control, or nobody would be one. I’m sure they just jack the rents up drastically when they do finally get the opportunity.

I did not see where the tenants were not paying the rent due under the terms of their lease.

NYC is soon to become more of a national joke than it already is. I’ll get the popcorn ready when DeBlasio starts stirring the pot.

RE :”I did not see where the tenants were not paying the rent due under the terms of their lease.”

You mean the Obamacare like price mandated lease?
Forcing the landlord to give the apartments away rather then to be able to rent them?

Are you two suggesting that "someone" should set a fire to remove the tenants? I hope not! That is a crime. It is called arson, and in many jurisdictions it is punishable by death, and for good reason.

Uncontrolled fire is a fearsome enemy, putting not only the tenants at risk of losing life and property, but also the neighbors and firefighters as well.

I am not a fan of rent control, but I am even less a fan of taking the law into one's own hands, especially when such action indiscriminately puts many people, including children, at risk of death.

I would hope you would think the same.

Wait, I thought I was going to read that the tenants hadn’t paid their rent. Turns out that they had, and that he just wanted more money and was willing to turf people out of their home to get it.

Brooklyn residents do not “bust” into apartments; residents “break” into them. Correct writing is not the forte of the NY Daily News authors Kerry Burke and Greg Smith.

Not a smart move at all. NYC is one of the best places to hire some anonymous muscle after $hitcago if one is angry enough to do so and smart enough not to fall for a donut-munching cop sting in the process. More than a few tenants who have annoyed/scammed/stole from their landlord/lady to the point of exasperation have been hit by burglaries and muggings. And Lord help you if you honk off one who has a friend in the local gang.

I have no idea but if they all decided to leave then a few of them may become our neighbors.
So maybe it’s good that they do live in NYC.

Perhaps you read a different story. I read about fires in the apartments. The tenants had to leave for safety reasons. The owner made repairs and upgrades that would have taken MONTHS, when the tenants weren’t paying a cent to him. Tenancy terminated. He is free to rent to someone else after putting his own time, money and hard work into repairing damage that was likely caused by the tenants.

Obama showed DeBlasio how it is done. He has been laying awake nights scheme dreaming. The fundamental change is going to be catastrophic for the Wall Street types.

It’s going to be Hill Street Blues all over again. Grafitti will scar 5th Avenue. Windows all over town will be broken. Ambulances will be robbed. Subways will be cluttered with the bodies of knocked out people. Out numbered Koreans will die in their grocery shops at the hands of the black plague. Jews will appeal to the UN for mercy. Potholes will swallow small cars. walls and sandbagged machine gun emplacements will block off the streets to Grenitich Village

There will be a 100% tax on OneWay tickets leaving New York. Taxis will become armored with urethane foam inflated no flat tires.
