About one third of the wounded Syrians who received treatment in recent months in hospitals in northern Israel carry an abnormally high number of bacteria, some of which are either uncommon or unknown in Israel. Some of these bacteria are resistant to all effective antibiotic treatments, reports Israel Hayom, based on statements by senior medical sources in the Health Ministry Directorate and internal documents.

Strange considering we’ve been told this was usually caused by an overuse of anti-biotics. I can’t see that being a problem in Syria. ????

I read in another FR thread that 8-20 Syrians have been found infected with kuru, a disease that is only spread by cannibalism. The last cases of kuru were on New Guinea, and that was many years ago, because those people don’t eat people anymore.

Why wouldn’t you think they might be over-using antibiotics in Syria? I’t’s not like Syria is a country full of brainiacs.

I do not know about Syria in particular, but antibiotics can be bought over the counter (either legally or illegally) in a lot of the countries in the area. Also, the real problem, I believe, is when the patient stops taking the antibiotic too early. The un-killed bacteria are the ones that have some resistance to the antibiotic. It is a problem in the US, but I would guess it is a real problem in low income countries.

Also, the real problem, I believe, is when the patient stops taking the antibiotic too early.

For cost reasons, no doubt, since drugs cost money, and money is in short supply in most such countries.
