Obama Signals a Shift From Military Might to Diplomacy
New York Times ^ | November 25, 2013 | By Mark Ländler

The weekend ended with the first tangible sign of a nuclear deal with Iran, after more than three decades of hostility. Then on Monday came the announcement that a conference will convene in January to try to broker an end to the civil war in Syria.

The success of either negotiation, both long sought by President Obama, is hardly assured — in fact the odds may be against them. But the two nearly simultaneous developments were vivid statements that diplomacy, the venerable but often-unsatisfying art of compromise, has once again become the centerpiece of American foreign policy.

But it also reflects a broader scaling-back of the use of American muscle, not least in the Middle East, as well as a willingness to deal with foreign governments as they are rather than to push for new leaders that better embody American values. “Regime change,” in Iran or even Syria, is out; cutting deals with former adversaries is in.

“Diplomacy” is just a polite way of saying, “Bend over and drop your drawers”.

Surrendering and smooching butt is a form of diplomacy - just the type favoured by the NYT.

The word must have gone out from the Democrats to the press that the toadies weren’t croaking loud enough.

Obama signals a shift from Sovereignty to Dhimmitude.

America demands Justice for the Fallen of Benghazi!

O stranger, tell the Lacedaemonians that we lie here, obedient to their command.

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

Diplomacy without force of arms is like music without instruments.

Definitely a fifth column move on Obama’s part.

“We’re getting our asses kicked with Syria and Iran. How do we get out of this?”

“Let’s give them money and say we’re negotiating.”

“Well, ‘Leading From Behind’ has worked. Let’s call it ‘Winning Through Capitulation’. That ought to confuse everyone for awhile.”

Please don’t take my lunch money

I’m going to buy the organic, Moochlle-approved, selections.

And I had the conflict resolution class, too.

he doesn’t give a damn. he gets to run around and claim that he is such an elevated form of life, he is such a wizard of diplomacy, look what he has done, and he’s nothing like george w. bush, etc., etc., etc.

barack obama already acts as though he can barely stand to exist on the same planet with so many stupid, dirty, and deeply flawed individuals. it’s all he can bear to wake up in the morning.

he will have already published his memoirs when iran nukes israel, or israel nukes iran. and I have no doubt that he will blame his successor as readily as he blames his predecessor. “I had this fixed until president [fill in the blank] screwed it up”.

This ‘change’ in strategy doesn’t have anything to do with you getting your @$$ handed to you when you tried to start WWIII in Syria, does it 0?

I don't trust Obama and Kerry, but the move to diplomacy over military intervention is inevitable. The nation doesn't want to fight another Mideast war of dubious benefit and cost. A decade of wars have left the nation in red ink and weary of the constant loss and crisis. And the chorus of the loudest warhawks who shame the nation for letting down our allies and international responsibilities generally show a remarkable tendency to avoid any military service themselves.
