In just two weeks, Walmart will open its first stores in the District of Columbia.
Walmart's H Street and Georgia Avenue locations will open Dec. 4 at 8 a.m. Both the 103,000-square-foot Georgia Avenue store and the 74,000-square-foot H Street location will feature fresh produce, a deli, organic food items and a full-service pharmacy.
The stores will hire a combined 600 associates after combing through the more 23,000 applications its received from potential employees.
The arrival of Walmart has not been a smooth one. Both stores were on the verge of never opening after the retail giant threatened to pull its plans if Mayor Vincent Gray signed a living wage bill.

I bet it closes in a year, as it will be the target of flash mobs who strip their shelves.
I predict the first flash mob rip off in 4 weeks.
Looter-guy got on a bus this morning out of Nawohleans, should be there for the Grand Shoplift Opening.

I thought the District of Corruption hated Walmart. This is weird.
I predict that shrinkage will outpace profits by spring..
My bet is that they unionize within a year.
I had a guy apply for a warehouse position once. Under “position applied for” he wrote “whorehouse”.
I wonder how many of 23,000 that applied can read. It’s really sad.
trying to draw 600 employees from that pool would be like trying to find a bushel full of the prettiest cowpies from a feedlot.
It's an "inside" joke. Those who live in D.C. will know what I mean.
I am not surprised.
When a million years ago I was a manger at a retail outlet, WalMart was our biggest threat/competitor.
We could not compete with their wages or benefits.
The unions know nothing about WalMart.
What happens if Mayor Gray ends up signing a living wage bill next Jan or Feb? Can’t just pick up and leave then.
That's good news and bad news. At least the people wanted to work, this is so sad.
23,000 people were looking to be exploited by capitalist pigs? Hard to believe. Welfare checks have to be increased.
I can’t imagine why they would open a store there but then again they surely know more about retailing than I do.
I do remember they opened a store in Tuskegee, Alabama and had to close it due to “losses”. I don’t think they had any flash mobs tho.
And those are just the local politicians and bureaucrats.
“That’s good news and bad news. At least the people wanted to work, this is so sad. “
This is indeed very sad. It’s a very stark reminder of what Obama has done to this country, its economy, and its people.
$25,000 a year isn’t all that much in DC.
