The National Security Agency is authorized to spy on the citizens of Americas closest allies, including Britain, even though those English-speaking countries have long had an official non-spying pact, according to a newly disclosed memorandum.

The NYT seems to miss the point which is that v.v. is true too.
I don’t get the big deal. All nations have spying on each other including allies for decades. It’s a normal case of gathering intell.
The problem is the NSA spying on it’s own citizens.
Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the US are all part of a pact, known as ECHELON or ‘Five Eyes’where all these countries share intellegence. Even if there where constitutional protections against the NSA spying on its citizens, the US Gov could simply get one of the other countries to do its dirty work for it and share the intelligence with them.
I have decided to refrain from making any comments about the NSA here. That should make them really nervous.
This was a big revelation during the Clinton admin. Nothing new.
It was/is a workaround for laws prohibiting domestic spying by the NSA.
We spy of Britons and report to their government and vice-versa.
Well, isn't that one of the points of the "five eyes"?
