The commandment not to erase or deface the name of G-d comes from Deut. 12:3. In that passage, the people are commanded that when they take over the promised land, they should destroy all things related to the idolatrous religions of that region, and should utterly destroy the names of the local deities. Immediately afterwards, we are commanded not to do the same with HaShem.

Also do not stop with Deuteronomy 12:4. Continue on to 12:5 and following. Deuteronomy 12:4 is an example of litotes. Like saying “not a bad ballplayer” to mean a great ballplayer. Not just “don’t wipe out the name of the Lord” but that the name of the Lord is to be exalted in all practice! Which of course obviates the wiping out of the Lord’s name.
