Same-sex couples who are legally married in other states can now file joint state tax returns in Missouri, Gov. Jay Nixon said Thursday.

...

At a news conference in his Capitol office, Nixon told reporters he will issue an executive order today telling the Missouri Department of Revenue to accept the couples’ joint state returns if they file joint federal returns.

...

Nixon’s position drew a quick rebuke from House Speaker Tim Jones, R-Eureka. The speaker said Nixon, a Democrat, was trying to violate voters’ will to satisfy his liberal allies.

“The governor’s job is to defend our state’s constitution — including the constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman that was passed overwhelmingly in this state — not to surrender to the whims of the Obama administration,” Jones said in a statement.

The governor of Missouri, a conservative state that overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a man and a woman, just chose to unilaterally recognize gay unions from other states. He is splitting hairs and saying he is only letting them file joint tax returns, but effectively they are now fully married at the state and federal level in all but name. He has done this by executive order, without consulting the people.

This is it, gay marriage has come to Red America. If this is allowed to stand without conservative resistance, same sex unions will be recognized in all 50 states in a matter of a couple of years. This better be a major topic tomorrow on conservative news outlets or else it is all over.

What can the legislature do? Can they ‘impeach’ him in some capacity.

There is no such thing as a moderate Democrat. The voters should have known.

Thank you (barf!) Anthony Kennedy. I hope a very stout tree with a large horizontal branch has your name on it.

That’s right they should. Some people have little faith in politicians from either party, so they vote for divided government as a check on one party running rampant. But when the executive branch ignores the legal boundaries of his/her power this is what we get.

I wonder what the pubbies in Missouri are going to do about this?
