Almost happened to me, frankly. I was drinking with an acquaintance (not a friend, but someone I know fairly well) at my local dive bar. He opened his wallet to tab out, and something that looked like a credit card falls out. I ask him what it is, and he replies, "it's my EBT card."

I spent the rest of the evening thinking to myself (I had bought him a couple drinks), "so, I'm not just paying you to drink with me . . . I'm PAYING you to drink with me." And yes, I wasn't thinking too clearly, but I remember thinking, "why the hell shouldn't I do it, too?"

My son is a cashier at Kroger and although the old legend about the woman in expensive clothes getting in her Escalade after using Food Stamps is pretty much just a legend, they do come in and sort their purchases into WIC items, EBT items and Cash items which almost always include cigarettes and beer. If they try to buy the Cash items on a card, 10% of the time it is rejected.
And they almost always have an attitude.
