My son is a cashier at Kroger and although the old legend about the woman in expensive clothes getting in her Escalade after using Food Stamps is pretty much just a legend, they do come in and sort their purchases into WIC items, EBT items and Cash items which almost always include cigarettes and beer. If they try to buy the Cash items on a card, 10% of the time it is rejected.
And they almost always have an attitude.

Legend, come visit my Walmart and I’ll show you LEGENDS for hours on end...
It’s not a legend, I saw it first hand at Walmart a few years ago.
I was right behind an older lady using her welfare card and when I walked out, she was loading her items into a new SUV, worth at least $50 grand.
This is not the norm but it is happening.
