Cuccinelli: 'We're Positioned to Shock the Political World'

On a conference call with reporters Friday afternoon, Republican Ken Cuccinelli said his campaign was closing aggressively and was "positioned to shock the political world" in Tuesday's Virginia election. Cuccinelli, who trails Democrat Terry McAuliffe in polling, said his campaign was beating their turnout and grass roots goals.

Cuccinelli stressed repeatedly that President Obama's decision to campaign on Sunday with McAuliffe was a "great opportunity" for the Republican's campaign. "[The Democrats] are having a rally to celebrate ObamaCare," Cuccinelli said. He noted that he was the "first person in the country" to fight ObamaCare, referencing the fact that he was the first to file a lawsuit challenging the health care law, and welcomed the introduction of the issue into the Governor's race.

He dismissed the possibility that Obama's appearance would energize Democrats to turn out for McAuliffe. He noted that McAuliffe has released very few specifics about his proposals, making it difficult to increase interest in the campaign. "Voters want to be for something," Cuccinelli said.

McAuliffe has maintained a steady lead in recent polling. The Democrat has been helped by a significant fundraising advantage. In recent weeks, McAuliffe has enjoyed a 3 or 4-1 advantage on the airwaves. In the closing days of the campaign, union and Democrat interest groups have poured additional resources into McAuliffe's campaign, but additional ad spending at this stage in the campaign delivers diminishing returns.

"We may be out raised," Cuccinelli said. "But, we won't be outworked."

Tuesday's election is expected to have a very low turnout, certainly much lower than the turnout in 2012. The electorate in odd-years tends to be older and more conservative than in presidential years, giving the Cuccinelli campaign hope of a strong finish.

The latest poll from Emerson shows a 2 point race and that is with Sarvis sucking up a chunk of GOP support. If you aren't helping us win in VA you aren't doing it right. Please volunteer, donate, whatever you can to help close out this race with a win. This will be my last post today. I'm heading to the local campaign office to make gotv calls.

I really like this guy. I don’t live in his state but I think he’s great. He’s good looking, personable (trivial matters but important in our media driven society) and can promote conservative ideas in a way that doesn’t scare ignorant people.

Here’s hoping that he wins! Our best presidents have been governors.

You’re right about him, livius. He’s sincere and humble, as well. Stand him next to McAwful and the obvious character difference is like day and night. No thinking person could possibly vote for the crook.

I would normally say that McAullife is a slimy as the worst of the used car salesmen, but I see no need to insult these used car salement.

I’ll just say, McAullife is one of the slimiest politicians around and I did donate money and win or lose, it is money well spent to oppose the sleazebag.

This looks like a replay of the 1992 Presidential elections. The leading candidate only has support of 42% of the people. The Republican candidate is being hurt by some fringe candidate (like Ross Perot did in’92).

I hope the results aren’t the same as ‘92. I hope the supporters of the 3rd party candidate are proud of themselves...

The whole country will be watching this race.

If Cuccinelli wins, it'll go in the memory hole in an instant.

Just like the Wisconsin situation and Governor Walker did.

Meanwhile, McAullife will retreat to Clinton-land to make more sleazy money and plot his next attempt.

Is Cuccinelli really just now introducing the Obamacare issue?

Unfortunately, that's what Lonergan said, and he didn't have a spoiler syphoning off GOP votes.

Levin was right yesterday when he said that people will still vote for McAuliffe even though they know he's no good, just to keep a Republican from getting a win.

Actually, it was Obama himself that introduced it. He looked across the Potomac, saw that McAuliffe held a solid double-digit lead, and decided to help his own cause by turning the Virginia gubernatorial election into a referendum about himself and his ObamaCare bill. In other words, Obama was hoping to ride McAuliffe's coattails.

Yet since Obama's little campaign stop, McAuliffe has lost his double-digit lead and is no longer a lock to win. Nothing would make me happier than for Obama to get his wish in making this race a referendum on ObamaCare and then seeing him lose. That is the headline I would like to see.
