Sen. David Barton? The Popular Christian Historian Is Apparently Considering It (Texas)

Tea Party activists are reportedly urging Christian historian David Barton to primary against Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas). The move comes as some Texas Republicans question Cornyn’s devotion to conservative values.

Rick Green, a close adviser to Barton and a speaker for the historian’s WallBuilder‘s organization, told National Review Online (NRO) that more than 1,000 Tea Party and conservative leaders have asked Barton to run.

Conservative historian David Barton (Credit: AP) “Polling says Sen. Cornyn is vulnerable and that’s why he is running ads right now,” Green wrote in an e-mail to the outlet. “Like America’s Founding Fathers, David Barton will not ‘seek’ this office, but if the people of Texas speak loud enough in the next few days, he could most certainly be drafted in by the voters.”

Just how serious are Barton’s supporters? They’re pretty adamant, according to JoAnn Fleming, executive director of Grassroots America We the People, a conservative political organization in Texas.

She said that some Tea Party leaders are slated to hold a conference call with Barton during the next few days.

“We believe that Senator Cornyn has become part of the establishment and we don’t believe that his priorities reflect the priorities of the people of Texas any longer,” she told NRO, adding that a constitutional conservative should be occupying his seat.

A Facebook group called “Draft David Barton for US Senate“ has been setup to help push the historian’s potential candidacy. The group, which is invite-only, had 1,628 members as of Thursday morning.

“This group is set up to alert the grassroots that there is a movement taking place that would like to encourage David Barton with Wallbuilders to run for the US Senate against John Cornyn,” reads a description of the Facebook effort.

He was in my hometown a few days before the 2000 election…I had a chance to speak with him for about 15 minutes. He warned then of some of the not so great influences around GW Bush. One of course was Rove….the other a shocker (at the time).

BTW, he was vice chair of Texas GOP at some point…he’s not a noob at this.

I think any generic Dem will get all of their Wendy Davis base support...and thus start at about 45. So any Dem would beat Corny ...if the election were today.

Of course nothing in politics is a straight line projection. But to answer your question, I believe that Corny is in serious trouble against ANY democrat. Maybe this will finally be Bill White’s turn?

You can’t get stabbed in the back by someone you don’t vote for.

Cornyn’s put the knife in my kidney for the last time.

Well I’m ready to get behind him if he announces. Vega seems worthless and Wyatt and Stovall don’t seem to be going anywhere. The more the merrier in the primary to get Corny under 50%, then we solidify to take him out in a runoff.

Bright, Maness, McDaniel, Bevin, Brannon, Carr, Cotton, etc. We can get these people elected in a conservative wave to sweep out the liberal wave in 2008.

Works for me!

And I wish Bevin would do what Bright is doing..FOCUS on OBAMA SCHUMER REID and run against McConnell via them…...

Spot on. He is running ads already, as the article says. He is running scared. He was part of the Surrender Caucus during the "Government Shut-down" Debate. He is such a wuss. Can't stand him.

Do NOT under estimate the people of Texas. Remember Ted Cruz beat the millionaire Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst for the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate. Dewhurst had money, high name recognition (He’s been around Texas politics for a gazillion years.) and the backing of the Texas political establishment, including Gov. Perry. Ted kicked Dewhurst’s hiney. Texans don’t take crap off of anybody; not even politicians.

It would be great if Ted Cruz came out in support of Cornyn’s Primary opponent; but, I doubt that will happen. I guess it’s not Senatorial ettiquette.

Cruz has already said he isn't getting involved in any primaries. So if there is a difference to be made in any of them then Sarah Palin will have to step up.

“Do NOT under estimate the people of Texas.”

I live in Texas and I don’t underestimate Texans.

IMO, Cornyn is banking on help from the dems to get reelected and it’s not going to work with this Texan.

she is...sorry that was typed in haste and thus unclear.

the point being, lots of Davis voters are going to show up. as the abortion queen, she is going to get the left out in droves. Abbott will win, for sure.

but the left will all show up on voting day, which means they will vote for whomever the D is against Cornyn.

It was clear to me it was Laura. He would not say that in so many words, but seemed clear to me. In retrospect, it’s not a shocker of course, but at the time……

Karen Hughes too.
