US 'eavesdropped on Vatican in run-up to conclave'

Rome — US secret services allegedly eavesdropped on cardinals before the conclave in March to elect a new pope, Italian weekly magazine Panorama claimed Wednesday.

"The National Security Agency wiretapped the pope," the magazine said, accusing the United States of listening in to telephone calls to and from the Vatican, including the accommodation housing cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio before he was elected Pope Francis.

The allegations follow a report on surveillance website Cryptome which said the United States intercepted 46 million telephone calls in Italy in December 2012 and early January 2013.

Among those, "there are apparently also calls from and to the Vatican," Panorama said.

"It is feared that the great American ear continued to tap prelates' conversations up to the eve of the conclave," it said, adding that there were "suspicions that the conversations of the future pope may have been monitored".

And now for something completely different.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit.

“Robes”. Dead giveaway that the speaker knows nothing about the Catholic Church and is probably hostile.

With a president hard at work driving a wedge between American Catholics and their bishops, it shouldn’t be that hard to see why that president would like to know what the pope’s talking about.

Sistine Chappel is an inner room and windows are not typical panes.
No Land Lines in there either.

I guess they’ll say it is a nation state, so no different from any other. Or maybe they won’t say anything, since no one in Congress will stop them except for Rand Paul, who is only one man.

Yeah, no surprise here. NSA guys just trying to find the best porn. I guess they don’t have to pay for their 900 number dial-ups.? Wait for it. How many pedophiles are hiding out at NSA? Maybe we can spot them by their brown shirts? If they have a Uni it probly looks a lot like the National Park Service sliders. Lots of pockets, epaulets, ribbons, good-guy buttons, creases-—but baggy pants.

Hey I thought the Lib Progressive Control Freak Statists believed in “Sepration of Church and Sate” when it comes to everything else, I guess it doesn’t include listening devices unless the “church” in question is a Mosque then it is sacred hallowed ground...

I don’t pretend to know a lot about the RCC, I’m just saying that the usual ‘national security’ argument is utterly void in this case.

who will blow the whistle on Catholic operatives in the U.S. government that inform the Vatican with intelligence on views of members of a U.S. administration???

Roman Catholic Popes have been in the spying business far longer than any U.S. government.

Did they have a “bug” in the Sistine Chapel?

The short answer is "No." Among the preparations for a conclave is sweeping the room for listening devices, not permitting any electronic devices into the room and jamming any electronic communications into or out of the room.

So, the Swiss Guard who guards the Vatican is to be greatly feared? Or were we trying to listen in on sensitive stuff like confessions from foreign leaders or movie and rock stars?

What threat could possibly be presented by one of the smallest municipalities in the universe?

Abuse of power or just trying to see how much air you can blow into a balloon before it pops .. Or just business as usual these days in DC and the WH?
