0300 and dense fog. All the runway camera caught was a blur and a fireball.

You would think a fireball would at least set off some type of sensor warning

Uhm.. our satellites see hordes of bats escaping caves for midnight snacks on radar scatter.

News Channel 5 reported that the camera caught the blur and fireball at 1:30 a.m.

On the 10:00 p.m. report, they mentioned that planes landing at smaller airports don't necessarily have to contact traffic controllers and this pilot might have thought he was landing at one of the airports close by. That with the fog so thick, he might not have known he was landing in Nashville -- might have thought he was over Smyrna or Murfreesboro.

Very sad over all.
